Tower of God Volume 1: “Position Test” (Episodes 28 through 30) Webtoon Review

October 10, 2020 by Aaron Ngo

Major Spoilers are included in this Webtoon Review. Please read with caution.

On August 31, 2020, I started and finished Tower of God Volume 1’s seventh story arc: “Position Test”. After the three-day period, the next test became school for all the remaining participants. Baam was also lucky his classes were delayed while he was comatose, otherwise he would’ve lost points for “tardiness”. Everyone is divided into five categories for the Position Test:

1.     Fisherman (4 out of 15 will pass)

2.     Spear Bearer (4 out of 16 will pass)

3.     Scout (3 out of 15 will pass)

4.     Light Bearer (2 out of 10 will pass)

5.     Wave Controller (2 out of 6 will pass)

The school setting allowed for more natural exposition on shinsu during Baam’s classes, and how the class will need to make a contract with a Guardian—beings who guard the shinsu of their Floors—in order to manipulate shinsu. There was also talk about natural-born talent versus hard work in regards to people’s ability to use shinsu.

This month-long school environment also allowed the characters to interact more naturally, similar to how students would talk to each other regarding schoolwork and how exhausting classes were.

Leesoo, Hatsu, Khun, and Baam even did an ice breaker activity—the “get to know each other” homework—which lead to legit humorous moments and interesting background stories for Hatsu and Khun. While the comedic arguing was initially making everyone turn on each other, Khun ultimately relented and made peace with Leesoo and Hatsu because he remembered Rachel telling him how lonely Baam was before entering the Tower.

The ending to the seventh arc—Rachel’s dream about Baam making friends under a starry night—was an interesting one to unpack. While Rachel wants to keep her distance from Baam for the time being, she appeared devastated to see Baam making friends based on how she woke up crying. There is a lot about Rachel that is still shrouded in mystery, especially making Khun lie to Baam about her presence. I’m looking forward to learning more about her character and her strong desire to see the real stars and sky up at the top of the Tower.

Tower of God is becoming more and more fascinating as I continue climbing through these episodes. I’m becoming more excited to see what happens next. Baam’s look also got an upgrade during this arc. I am digging Baam’s new appearance. Thanks for reading this Webtoon review. I’m going to keep it climbing!
