Tower of God Volume 1: “Rest” (Episodes 26 and 27) Webtoon Review

October 10, 2020 by Aaron Ngo

Major Spoilers are included in this Webtoon Review. Please read with caution.

On August 31, 2020, I started and finished Tower of God Volume 1’s sixth story arc: “Rest”. The two-episode arc centered around the Crown Game’s aftermath and the three-day rest period before starting up the next test.

Baam and Hwa Ryun ended up in critical condition, and there was no victor to the Crown Game due to Rachel’s team refusing to grab the crown. There was some exposition also dumped regarding the Crown Game’s true purpose—getting Rachel’s team off the Second Floor as quickly as possible for the danger they pose—and the overall purpose of the Tower’s Second Floor.

Yu Han Sung explained to Lero-Ro that the Second Floor is not designed to determine who is worthy of climbing the Tower but to figure out which participants pose danger to the Tower itself. We also learned that Baam—being an Irregular and the cause of Hwa Ryun’s injury—might potentially be considered a danger to the Tower. Baam has the power to manipulate shinsu—the Tower’s source of power—without a formal contract.

Now that Rachel had officially entered the narrative, we learned about the Legend of the Tower—being able to see real stars in the sky at the top of the Tower—and her desire to see them. She also told Khun—while Baam was comatose during the three-day period—to keep her presence a secret from Baam. This secret keeping will not end well.

There was a slight focus on Anak and her possession of the Black March from Baam. There was a comedic moment where Anak’s teammate Leesoo tried to communicate with the Black March, but he was merely electrocuted several times in response. For the time being, Black March refuses to work for Anak. Rak also had a comedic moment where he pretended to not care about Baam’s condition, but his actions said otherwise when he went to check on “his prey”.

Also, through an interaction from Rachel’s teammate Androssi, we learned that Anak is a “fake”—whatever that means—and that there is something “special” about Rachel that made Androssi want to team up with her. Androssi also seems incredibly strong based on how she effortlessly blocked Anak’s attack.

Tower of God is playing the mystery element hard at this point in the series with Rachel’s official introduction, Baam’s powers, the Zahard’s Princess lore and their 13-month weapons, the Legend of the Tower regarding the real sky and stars, and the testing purposes to weed out those with dangerous powers like Baam.

There is clearly a lot going on in this Webtoon, but the story doesn’t feel overstuffed but intentionally under stuffed. Honestly, I’m curious to read what happens next. Thanks for reading my Webtoon review, everyone! Let’s keep it reading—and climbing up the Tower!
