Tower of God Volume 1: “Zahard’s Princess” (Episodes 31 through 34) Webtoon Review

October 10, 2020 by Aaron Ngo

Major Spoilers are included in this Webtoon Review. Please read with caution.

On September 1, 2020, I started and finished Tower of God Volume 1’s eighth story arc: “Zahard’s Princess”. This arc took a backseat on Baam and the other characters to give its attention on Anak and Androssi, the two Zahard Princesses and their background stories. There was also a weird focus on the icebreaker friend list homework and food that tied into this arc’s main story. Anyway, I’m investing more and more into the actual lore behind the Tower and how that will likely factor into Baam’s character significance later on.

During the Fisherman training class, Anak and Androssi clash with each other. This is where things got interesting when the context behind Anak being called a “fake” was addressed. Khun also dug into Anak’s background and learned Anak Zahard was supposed to be dead. Also, I may have used the name “Jahad” in my previous Tower of God Webtoon reviews, but it’s the same thing just a different translation.

The truth of the matter is… Anak Zahard is dead and the girl Androssi is fighting—the one we’ve been getting to know throughout the series so far—is her daughter with the same name. Through this conflict, we learned more about Zahad’s Princesses and how they’re not supposed to date, marry, or have children based on the father’s rules.

The Original Anak Zahard broke all those rules, getting killed along with her husband for it. Anak Zahard—the daughter—managed to survive and flee with someone resembling Evan—from the first arc—and the weapon Green April. As a result of her parents’ death, Anak vowed to kill all of Zahad’s Princesses. Androssi simply wanted to know why her sister would choose a life of poverty, disgrace, and inevitable death for breaking the rules over the one already handed to her filled with royal prestige; she also wanted to know if her sister had any regrets about the life she chose.

Yeah. Androssi and Anak—aunt and niece—have a lot of issues to sort through after they heal up from that fall off the pillar they took. Oh yeah, their whole conflict was kind-of played for laughs toward the end because it occurred while class was in session.

This lightheartedness allowed Baam and Leesoo to reenter the arc’s ending—visiting Androssi and Anak respectively—to offer them some delicious food from the cafeteria in exchange for signing their friend list homework assignment. I enjoyed how serious the whole thing started off and then it ended rather lighthearted with the food-friend list signing exchange and both Anak and Androssi being bedridden, so they couldn’t easily reach the food.

Tower of God is an interesting Webtoon series for sure, with interesting characters. This was definitely a fun arc to experience. I would highly recommend reading Tower of God for those interested in a challenge. Thanks for reading my Webtoon review, everyone! Let’s keep it climbing up the Tower!
