Tower of God Volume 1: “Headon’s Floor” (Episodes 1 through 4) Webtoon Review

October 10, 2020 by Aaron Ngo

Major Spoilers are included in this Webtoon Review. Please read with caution.

On August 30, 2020, I started and finished reading Tower of God Volume 1’s first story arc: Headon’s Floor. I had been hearing many good things about this Webtoon series and the anime, so I decided to check this one out as a “warm-up” before I dove into Big Daddy One Piece manga next. Like our main protagonist Baam, let’s see if I can also make it up the Tower!

Created by Korean Artist SIU—Slave. Inutero—back in 2010, the story centers around a young boy named Twenty-Fifth Baam who wants to find his childhood friend Rachel somewhere in this mysterious Tower.

“Headon’s Floor” does an amazing job on introducing the main characters—Baam, Lady Yuri, and Evan—the vague rules of the Tower, and the main goal for Bam to climb the Tower. I enjoyed the story so far and the beautiful artwork—similar to unOrdinary but drawn with more depth. The color scheme is magnificent and intricate. I’m in love.

Luckily, the exposition had been handled with precise care as Baam has no knowledge about the Tower’s rules and must learn to pass the tests along the way based on how this first test went. The end of this arc also revealed that Lady Yuri and Evan may know more than Bam about the Tower’s rules—and have taken an interest in him too—but they don’t know much more than him either when it comes to the grand scheme behind the Tower.

Baam appears to be a vanilla protagonist for the time being—not much of his personality aside from his main goal was revealed in the first four episodes—but I have a strong feeling they’ll flesh his character out more in the upcoming arcs. The episodes also confirmed Bam had no real social interactions beyond his childhood friend Rachel, so he’s like a stranger in a strange world.

Overall, I gathered enough intrigue to keep climbing Tower of God. Based on what my friends and family have told me about the Webtoon over the years—the usual “this anime is really good; you should watch it”—I have no doubt it’ll get better once the series actually kicks off. And once I catch up with the Webtoon series, I’ll watch the anime next. Then it’s Big Daddy One Piece. Thanks for reading my Webtoon review, everyone! Let’s keep it reading!
