Tower of God Volume 1: “Evankhell’s Hell” (Episodes 5 through 8) Webtoon Review

October 10, 2020 by Aaron Ngo

Major Spoilers are included in this Webtoon Review. Please read with caution.

On August 30, 2020, I started and finished Tower of God Volume 1’s second story arc: “Evankhell’s Hell”. While the number of episodes may seem short for these arcs, the episode length is actually longer than usual for a Webtoon. The more I read this Webtoon, the more I’m understanding why people compare it to long-standing manga series One Piece. Tower of God is the One Piece of Webtoons like how The God of High School is DBZ’s Webtoon equivalent. I thought I would point out that interesting observation before diving into what went down in this arc.

After the flashback scene with Baam and Rachel on “Why people fight?”, this arc kicked off another test to clear the floor: reduce the number of Regulars from 400 to 200. Luckily for me, I had just read and watched The Hunger Games series, so I quickly figured out what this arc was going to be about. May the odds be ever in your favor, Baam.

Baam is given a crash course lesson on “Why people fight?” when he is attacked by a swordsman five seconds into the test starting, who is killed by an archer, and then that archer is killed by a sniper. The violence was fast and gory, making Baam understand the stakes involved in this test.

This arc introduced a lot more characters into the series—like a crocodile humanoid named Rak Wraithraiser and a strange human named Khun Aguero Agnis. There were other characters too—Hatsu and Anak—fighting elsewhere on the floor who may become important players later on. The artwork on these characters were drawn inconsistently for some reason, but hopefully this isn’t a common pattern throughout the Webtoon. The fight scenes were drawn beautifully though, especially Rak’s red spear attack cutting through the pages.

I didn’t like how short “The Hunger Games” aspect was, but I did like how the test’s sudden next phase was to make a “team of three” in five minutes with those you were trying to kill a few seconds ago. The humor developed from the awkward—but urgent—situation made me forgive SIU for allowing Baam to avoid getting blood on his hands so early on. Bam was really close to murdering an innocent person, but Khun stopped him in time.

Based on what I’ve read so far, Tower of God is gradually adding more players who want to climb the tower but keeping the majority of their motives—and the purpose of the Tower itself—hidden. The only one we known—aside from Baam, of course—is Rak’s motive, which is to hunt strong enemies on every floor he clears. I am having a blast with this Webtoon, so I will keep it climbing with Baam and his new team. Thanks for reading my Webtoon review, everyone! I feel confident enough to recommend Tower of God at this point.
