Tower of God Volume 2: The Prince of Zahard: “The Preys” (Episodes 19 through 21) Webtoon Review

October 17, 2020 by Aaron Ngo

Tower of God Volume 2: The Prince of Zahard: “The Preys” (Episodes 19 through 21) Webtoon Review. Written by Aaron Ngo.

On September 4, 2020, I started and finished Tower of God Volume 2: The Prince of Zahard’s fifth story arc: “The Preys”. This arc made me realize how well-crafted these past few arcs were into making Ja Wangnan the perfect foil to Viole—the character who will remind him of the Baam he used to be. Ja Wangnan’s character development throughout The Prince of Zahard made him worthy of being the secondary protagonist.

Tower of God Volume 2: The Prince of Zahard: “The Untrustworthy Room” (Episodes 11 through 18) Webtoon Review

Tower of God Volume 2: The Prince of Zahard: “The Untrustworthy Room” (Episodes 11 through 18) Webtoon Review. Written by Aaron Ngo.

On September 4, 2020, I started and finished Tower of God Volume 2: The Prince of Zahard’s fourth story arc: “The Untrustworthy Room”. While the rules to the latest test were kind-of complicated to follow, I did enjoy the message behind the test: Teamwork! The basis of the test is for the other participants—like Ja Wangnan—to conquer rooms and gain allies before Viole could defeat the Ranker and steal Yeon’s room.

Tower of God Volume 2: The Prince of Zahard: “Bath” (Episodes 9 and 10) Webtoon Review

October 17, 2020 by Aaron Ngo

Tower of God Volume 2: The Prince of Zahard: “Bath” (Episodes 9 and 10) Webtoon Review. Written by Aaron Ngo.

On September 4, 2020, I started and finished reading Tower of God Volume 2: The Prince of Zahard’s third story arc: “Bath”. The story arc centered on giving everyone bath and rest before the next test. We’re given more time to know the new characters during this arc and the politics involved with Viole’s status as FUG, a Slayer dedicated to killing Zahard. Associating with Viole would brand the rest of the candidates, which was a similar situation to when everyone discovered Baam was an Irregular during Volume 1.

Tower of God Volume 2: The Prince of Zahard: “The Strongest Regular” (Episodes 6 through 8) Webtoon Review

Tower of God Volume 2: The Prince of Zahard: “The Strongest Regular” (Episodes 6 through 8) Webtoon Review. Written by Aaron Ngo.

On September 4, 2020, I started and finished Tower of God’s Volume 2: The Prince of Zahard’s second story arc: “The Strongest Regular”. Initially, I found investing in new characters kind-of difficult, but knowing Baam—going by Jue Viole Grace—was in the new group helped a lot. This arc was fascinating for introducing us to this new version of Baam, who likely went through a dark phase after Rachel’s betrayal. The subverting of audience’s expectations was strong in this arc.

My Hero Academia Volume 25: “Tomura Shigaraki: Origin” (Chapters 236 through 246) Manga Review. Written by Aaron Ngo.

On October 9, 2020, I started and finished reading My Hero Academia Volume 25: “Tomura Shigaraki: Origin”. I had such a great time reading this manga book after catching up with Tower of God Webtoon, that I decided to binge-read the rest of My Hero Academia’s latest chapters currently out after this manga book. With 288 chapters total out at time of this review’s publication—meaning I had 42 manga chapters to read—the reading challenge didn’t take too long.

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Chapter 205.1 “Special One-Shot” Manga Review. Written by Aaron Ngo.

On October 4, 2020, The Promised Neverland and Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba dropped bonus chapters. The hype was real for these unexpected bonus chapters coming at the start of October, especially with those manga series having concluded earlier this year. For those interested, my manga review for The Promised Neverland’s bonus chapter is here.

The Promised Neverland Chapter 181.1 "Special One-Shot" Manga Review

October 17, 2020 by Aaron Ngo

The Promised Neverland Chapter 181.1 Manga Review. Written by Aaron Ngo.

The Promised Neverland bonus chapter is centered around Ray—prior to the start of the series—and his emotional journey learning and processing the truth about demons eating humans. While we were shown many scenes that were showcased in the manga, this one-shot chapter dove deeper into Ray’s mindset and why he isolated himself from the other kids to read his books.

On October 9, 2020, The Haunting of Bly Manor—the spiritual successor to The Haunting of Hill House—dropped on Netflix. I started watching the series on day 1 and finished on October 14, 2020. Long story short: I liked The Haunting of Hill House much better than The Haunting of Bly Manor. If you want to learn why, let me continue to explain in the review below.

Pen15 Hulu Original Season 2 Part 1 Review

Pen15 Hulu Original Season 2 Part 1 Review. Written by Aaron Ngo.

Major Spoilers are included in this season review. Please read with caution.

On September 26, 2020, I started watching Pen15 Season 2 Part 1—a cringe-comedy show—with my siblings over the weekend and finished on October 2, 2020 without them. Season 2 Part 2—another 7 episodes—is slated to come out on Hulu sometime next year, but the episodes we got went deeper into the cringey, awkwardness, and horror of realistic middle-school drama. I enjoyed the first season a lot, and decided to keep watching the second season.

Pen15 Hulu Original Season 1 Review

Pen15 Hulu Original Season 1 Review. Written by Aaron Ngo.

On September 24, 2020, I watched Pen15—a cringe-comedy show—with my siblings over the weekend and finished on September 26, 2020. I went into this comedy show blind, so learning why this show was called Pen15—seeing what it spelled like stylized—cracked me up. The cringe in this show is cleverly brilliant to say the least. Yes, this series weaponizes its cringe to give us a level of comedy that I never thought could exist.

On September 3, 2020, I watched Fate / Grand Order: First Order, a 2016 movie based on the mobile Fate / Grand Order—Fate GO or FGO—and the events of its Prologue. The Fate series is continuously growing bigger with its countless anime adaptations, various game spin-offs, and the next movie—Fate/stay night Heaven’s Feel Part 3—set to release sometime in 2020.

Digimon Adventure REBOOT Episode 19 “The Fist of the Beast King Roars” Review. Written by Aaron Ngo.

The latest episode—“The Fist of the Beast King Roars”—established how the show will be sort-of structured moving forward. I stress sort-of because what I thought was going to happen didn’t—and for once while watching this show, that’s a good thing.

On September 3, 2020, I started and finished reading Tower of God Volume 1’s twelfth story arc: “Epilogue – Rachel”. I have officially finished Volume 1—the first 78 episodes—of Tower of God. Tower of God Volume 1: “Last Examination” (Episodes 57 through 74) Webtoon Review. Written by Aaron Ngo.

On September 2, 2020, I started reading Tower of God Volume 1’s eleventh story arc: “Last Examination” and finished on September 3. I enjoyed the payoffs regarding Anak, Androssi, and Lady Yuri—she finally arrived into the narrative—and their faceoff against Ren. Honestly, I’m more invested in that storyline than the Baam and Rachel drama. Plus, the 13-month series weapons and the lore behind Zahard’s Princesses are so cool.

Tower of God Volume 1: “Submerged Fish” (Episodes 52 through 56) Webtoon Review. Written by Aaron Ngo.

On September 2, 2020, I started and finished Tower of God Volume 1’s tenth story arc: “Submerged Fish”. This story arc dealt with the Hide-and-Seek aftermath, and who would end up being qualified for the final test. Khun’s actions—failing his team on purpose to protect Baam and Rachel—were also addressed in this arc, and why he was so invested in their drama.

Tower of God Volume 1: “Hide-and-Seek” (Episodes 35 through 51) Webtoon Review. Written by Aaron Ngo.

On September 1, 2020, I started and finished Tower of God Volume 1’s ninth story arc: “Hide-and-Seek”. This was a long arc—16 episodes—with good action sequences, more beautifully-drawn and consistent artwork, great emotional moments, and a darker tone that displayed how far the characters were willing to go in order to climb the Tower.
