Tower of God Volume 1: “Epilogue - Rachel” (Episodes 75 through 78) Webtoon Review

October 10, 2020 by Aaron Ngo

Major Spoilers are included in this Webtoon Review. Please read with caution.

On September 3, 2020, I started and finished reading Tower of God Volume 1’s twelfth story arc: “Epilogue – Rachel”. I have officially finished Volume 1—the first 78 episodes—of Tower of God. My first five days—August 30 to September 3—reading this Webtoon have been an interesting climb up the Tower. I’m determined and committed to finishing this “warm-up”, so that I’ll be more than prepared to challenge Big Daddy One Piece manga.

With this Epilogue, we learned why Rachel did what she did to Baam and her true hideous personality and selfish desire to climb up the Tower. The other side-characters—who believe Baam is dead—are also resolved with helping Rachel climb up the Tower in Baam’s memory. Of course, they have no idea how Baam truly died. It’s f***ing digusting.

When reading this short Epilogue arc, I didn’t expect Rachel—through a flashback from episode 1 from her perspective—to be so nasty and resentful of her friend Baam being worthy instead of her. Like, instead of being supportive, she was jealous and petty and made shady deals to become the “heroine of the story”. I mean, she did abandon him from the get go, but I assumed there was a sympathetic reason for her abandoning Baam. What a way to subvert the audience’s expectations.

Well done, SIU. Well done.

I am looking forward though to seeing more Hwa Ryun—a character who impressed me during the “Crown Game” story arc—in Volume 2, since we learned she has a bigger role to play in the narrative regarding Rachel. She also has an awesome eyepatch and great fighting power, so I’m definitely excited to see her back in action. In addition, Hwa Ryun has mysterious plans for Baam as well, foreshadowing his eventual return at some point to the testing floors in Volume 2.

On the Ranker front, Leo-Ro and Quant have quit on Yu Han Sung over their disagreements regarding the floor tests. Quant and Leo-Ro also have a hilarious dynamic that I hope will be explored more in Volume 2. Where they’re headed next is the 77th floor for some answers. WE NEED ANSWERS GOD DAMMIT!

Overall, Tower of God is an impressive Webtoon series with a great plot, setting, characters, and an overarching mystery that keeps pulling readers deeper into the Tower. Similar to what I had done with The God of High School, Haikyuu!!, and The Promised Neverland, I will hit the anime series—which covers the first volume’s 78 Webtoon episodes in 13 anime episodes—after I finish climbing to the latest Webtoon episode—Season 3 Episode 68. Thanks for reading my Webtoon review, everyone! Let’s keep it climbing up Tower of God’s Volume 2!

Volume 2 has 337 episodes. Challenge Accepted!
