Tower of God Volume 1: “Submerged Fish” (Episodes 52 through 56) Webtoon Review

October 10, 2020 by Aaron Ngo

Major Spoilers are included in this Webtoon Review. Please read with caution.

On September 2, 2020, I started and finished Tower of God Volume 1’s tenth story arc: “Submerged Fish”. This story arc dealt with the Hide-and-Seek aftermath, and who would end up being qualified for the final test. Khun’s actions—failing his team on purpose to protect Baam and Rachel—were also addressed in this arc, and why he was so invested in their drama. Apparently, Khun had sabotaged to dispel his own loneliness—something he caused on his own based on his tragic backstory with his older sister Maria, which was his primary reason for climbing the Tower.

Khun confided in Rak—who had returned in this arc. The characters’ motives—particularly Baam’s—also changed during this arc. Baam decided to climb up the Tower with Rachel, who had lost the use of her legs during the disastrous Hide-and-Seek game. Hearing Baam’s determination made Khun realize his lack of trust stemmed from what happened with his sister and decided to help Baam and Rachel climb up the Tower to make up for his past mistakes. Rak wants to help too, still desiring to hunt down Baam someday as “his prey”.

The details of what actually happened during the Hide-and-Seek game were also fully explained through Khun and Leo-Ro’s conversation about Ho’s attack on Rachel.

Khun’s cunningness and tactful mind reminds me a lot of Norman’s from The Promised Neverland based on how he could persuade—or coerce—others to work with him on his plans. But while Khun patted himself on the back for his “perfect plan” during the Hide-and-Seek game, he admitted to Leo-Ro that he didn’t consider Baam’s feelings when making the plan and implied that was the same mistake he made with his older sister.

The plot also developed in this arc, introducing a group known as the Royal Enforcement Division—RED—through Yuga, Baam’s Wave Controller teacher. Yuga sees great potential in Baam and wants to recruit him into RED once he becomes a Ranker. Yugo is after the Green April and Black March weapons and is on a mission to eliminate Anak Zahard, but he is caught by Yu Han Sung.

However, instead of trying to stop Yugo from carrying out his plans, Yu Han Sung offers to help him retrieve the weapons and kill Anak, but he doesn’t explain why. Based on this interaction, Yu Han Sung may have an agenda of his own regarding the Tower and its participants. The next arc should be quite explosive given all that was set here.

Thanks for taking the time to read this Webtoon review, everyone! I really do appreciate it. Let’s keep it climbing up the Tower!
