October 03, 2020 by Aaron Ngo

Digimon Adventure REBOOT Episode 17 “The Battle In Tokyo Against Orochimon” Review. Written by Aaron Ngo.

The latest Digimon Adventure Reboot episode had a strong focus on plot and action with quiet character moments sprinkled in-between. Picking up where we left off from last week’s episode, the DigiDestined have reunited in time to fight against Orochimon—an eight-headed snake Ultimate Digimon. After MetalGreymon and Zudomon were knocked back into Rookies, everyone—except Matt—decided to retreat.

October 03, 2020 by Aaron Ngo

Supernatural Season 15 Part 1 Review. Written by Aaron Ngo.

Due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, Supernatural’s final season was effectively cut into two parts. The first part—13 episodes—aired originally from October 2019 to March 2020, with the second part—the final 7 episodes of the series—starting to air on October 8, 2020. For those who are somehow unaware, Supernatural is about two brothers named Sam (Jared Padalecki) and Dean Winchester (Jensen Ackles) hitting the road and hunting monsters.

Starsight Book Review

October 03, 2020 by Aaron Ngo

Starsight Book Review. Written by Aaron Ngo.

On August 24, 2020, I started reading Starsight—the sequel to Brandon Sanderson’s Skyward—and finished on August 28. While the first book focused on main protagonist Spensa’s transformation from angry teen to competent flight leader, the second book forced her to evolve further when she is confronted with the stuff she fears most.

The God of High School Episode 13 “GOD / GOD” Anime Review

October 03, 2020 by Aaron Ngo

The God of High School Episode 13 “GOD / GOD” Anime Review. Written by Aaron Ngo.

The God of High School officially concluded its first season. How the show began—three friends entering a high school tournament—is now this supernatural fantasy series filled with monsters and Gods. The action sequence in the first half and the Epilogue second half didn’t feel right. The second half was setting up everything for a season two that may not come, but the first half did deliver amazing fight sequences with little to no narrative drive.

The God of High School Episode 12 “FOX / GOD” Anime Review

September 26, 2020 by Aaron Ngo

The God of High School Episode 12 “FOX / GOD” Anime Review. Written by Aaron Ngo.

The God of High School episode 12 packed a lot of story elements and beautiful fight scenes into its 20-minute runtime. The experience was overwhelming and left those who hadn’t read the Webtoon with more questions than answers. The God of High School anime would’ve been so much better if it was given 20+ episodes for its first season instead of only a measly 13. This episode picked up on the cliffhanger from the last episode—IIpyo and Jegal fighting—and didn’t stop running until the episode was over.

On August 1, 2020, I read The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes’—the newest The Hunger Games prequel novel—first chapter. Then I took a week-long break from the novel to finish up on My Hero Academia manga books, but I resumed reading the novel on August 9, 2020 and finished on August 14, 2020.

Mockingjay Book Review

Mockingjay Book Review. Written by Aaron Ngo.

On July 27, 2020, I started reading the final book in The Hunger Games trilogy—Mockingjay—and finished on July 30, 2020. This was my second time experiencing the series, and I’m grateful to have read them not only to prepare for The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, but also to have fictional context on what’s been happening in the world lately due to the coronavirus pandemic, Black Lives Matter Movement 2020, the police brutality currently happening in Portland and other parts of the United States…

Catching Fire Book Review

September 26, 2020 by Aaron Ngo

Catching Fire Book Review. Written by Aaron Ngo.

On July 21, 2020, I revisited my favorite Hunger Games novel—Catching Fire—and finished on July 24, 2020. Back during my high school days—around 2009—I was obsessed with Suzanne Collins’ Hunger Games alongside a good friend of mine, who suggested the series to me. I remembered us reading these books and discussing the themes during English class. I cherished those memories, as having talks like that are hard to come by in today’s times…

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2 Movie Review

September 26, 2020 by Aaron Ngo

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2 Movie Review. Written by Aaron Ngo.

On September 2, 2020, I got around to rewatching The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 2 and found myself having similar thoughts from my viewing of Part 1. Honestly, there really wasn’t a reason to split the book Mockingjay into two parts except to follow what the Harry Potter and Twilight movies did for cash grabbing purposes. Despite the split though, Part 2’s beginning still found ways to spin their wheels for the movie’s first hour or so.

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 Movie Review

September 26, 2020 by Aaron Ngo

The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 Movie Review. Written by Aaron Ngo.

On August 19, 2020, I rewatched The Hunger Games: Mockingjay Part 1 for the first time in a long time. After reading the original trilogy books and The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, I decided to give the movies another try too. After I finished the Part 1 movie though, I thought to myself, “There really wasn’t a reason to split the third book into two parts except for box-office revenue—cash grab—purposes”. As a result, the movie stumbled into a few glaring issues that are hard to ignore.

The Hunger Games: Catching Fire Movie Review. Written by Aaron Ngo.

On July 25, 2020, I rewatched The Hunger Games: Catching Fire after finishing the novel for the second time on July 24, 2020. I was a huge fan of Suzanne Collins’ The Hunger Games trilogy back in high school (2009 through 2013) and lived for the thought-provoking conversations I had about the series with a good friend of mine during English Class.

Digimon Adventure REBOOT Episode 16 “The Jet-Black Shadow Invades Tokyo” Review

September 26, 2020 by Aaron Ngo

Digimon Adventure REBOOT Episode 16 “The Jet-Black Shadow Invades Tokyo” Review. Written by Aaron Ngo.

After everyone received their Ultimate Digimon in the last six episodes, the latest episode refocused on the plot and what’s been going on with Tokyo. Tai, Izzy, and Mimi find themselves back home, but not everything is what it seems. The people around them aren’t reacting to their Digimon running around nor does the place appear to have suffer any repercussions from the power blackout.

Digimon Adventure REBOOT Episode 15 “Zudomon's Iron Hammer of Lightning” Review

September 20, 2020 by Aaron Ngo

Digimon Adventure REBOOT Episode 15 “Zudomon's Iron Hammer of Lightning” Review. Written by Aaron Ngo.

I had a better time with this episode than the “Izzy-centric” episode. The “Joe-centric” episode had raised the stakes for Joe’s character development, putting the reliability aspect into full throttle. Joe was feeling useless when he realized Sora and Matt were making all the strategic decisions without him, but Gomamon kept assuring him that he had an important role to play in the group too. Then while crossing a snowy mountain terrain, Joe, Matt, and Sora encounter Mammothmon and its Frigimon crew trying to stop them from crossing the river.

Pokemon Journeys: The Series Netflix Original Part 2 Review

Pokemon Journeys: The Series Netflix Original Part 2 Review. Written by Aaron Ngo.

On September 11, 2020, Netflix released Pokemon Journeys: The Series’ Part 2—another 12 episodes. I watched leisurely throughout that weekend and finished on September 15, 2020. Having watched Part 1 recently during August—the link to that review is here—it was good timing for the next part to drop. There were low stakes during Part 2, but I did enjoy the follow-up with the cliffhanger from Part 1.

On September 6, 2020, I watched the latest Disney Plus Original Movie that dropped on August 28, 2020. After five years of no Phineas and Ferb episodes, the movie captured the essence of what the series is about and made it more joyful and bouncier for the movie’s longer runtime.

The God of High School Episode 10 “oath/meaning” Anime Review

September 12, 2020 by Aaron Ngo

The God of High School Episode 10 “oath/meaning” Anime Review. Written by Aaron Ngo.

The God of High School delivered an action-driven episode, with all the story elements coming together to bring the tournament down. The episode broke down Nox—a cult dedicated to one God and denounces all others—and their intentions to stop GOH and kill all the Charyeok-users for borrowing power from “false Gods”. Once Jin Mori, Han Daewi, and Yoo Mira learned about this group and why they kidnapped Jin Taejin, Jin Mori became more determined than ever to win GOH.
