Digimon Adventure REBOOT Episode 14 “The King of the Insects Clash” Review

September 12, 2020 by Aaron Ngo

Digimon Adventure REBOOT Episode 14 “The King of the Insects Clash” Review. Written by Aaron Ngo.

I didn’t really know what to expect going into this episode. After back-to-back Girl Power episodes with Mimi and Sora getting their Ultimate Digimon, I realized Izzy and Tentomon weren’t given much to do in the reboot series other than be information dumpers. Izzy having little to no screen time other than to inform the other kids about what’s going on in Tokyo didn’t help with that opinion either. Basically, it was hard to care about Izzy’s centric episode.

Alexa & Katie Netflix Original Part 4 Review

September 12, 2020 by Aaron Ngo

Alexa & Katie Netflix Original Part 4 Review. Written by Aaron Ngo.

This American sitcom’s latest batch of episodes dropped on June 13, 2020. I binge-watched Part 4—all 8 episodes—on June 16, 2020 with my brother. This was also Alexa & Katie’s final season. The series centered around Alexa (Paris Berelc) and Katie (Isabel May), two best friends navigating the terrors of high school in addition to Alexa’s cancer diagnosis. Their close friendship was the heart of the series and the driving force behind the topic of cancer survivors and their treatment in today’s society.

Pose Season 2 Review

September 12, 2020 by Aaron Ngo

Pose Season 2 Review. Written by Aaron Ngo.

On August 14, 2020, I started watching Pose’s second season with my little brother and finished on August 25. What a great way to spend the last eleven days with him before he had to go back to college for fall semester. Watching this season was a real life-changing experience, but it also pissed me off because all the trans actors were snubbed for Emmy nominations.

Pose Season 1 Review

Pose Season 1 Review. Written by Aaron Ngo.

On August 14, 2020, I finished Pose’s eight-episode first season. I had been watching this groundbreaking show sporadically throughout July and August with my little brother, giving each episode my undivided attention. Watching this series validated, changed, and challenged my initial viewpoints on media representation for queers and trans people of color. I learned—and unlearned—a lot about this amazing community.

Get On Up Movie Review

September 12, 2020 by Aaron Ngo

Get On Up Movie Review. Written by Aaron Ngo.

On August 30, 2020, I watched Get On Up—a biographical movie on James Brown’s life and career released on 2014—to continue praising Chadwick Boseman and the legacy he left for us all. Let me start with how amazing Chadwick Boseman nailed the role, and the charisma, determination, and funk he put into the character. He also perfected James Brown’s swagger to the best of his ability, making it quite difficult to take my eyes off him. Like God damn! Chadwick Boseman played James Brown and Jackie Robinson—two Black American icons! What an incredible man and actor.

Black Panther Movie Review

Black Panther Movie Review. Written by Aaron Ngo.

On August 31, 2020, I watched Black Panther in honor of Chadwick Boseman’s death. Rewatching this movie made me realize how different it was from the previous Marvel movies—like Captain America: Civil War and Guardians of the Galaxy—but at the same time, how the same it was based on how Black Panther followed the Marvel movie formula.

I have been keeping up to date with the Webtoon since I started reading it back in May 2020. It’s been an interesting ten months that was made harder after I was forced to read weekly.

On August 9, 2020, I started and finished reading My Hero Academia’s Volume 23: “Our Brawl”. This volume concluded the joint battle training between Class 1-A and Class 1-B. The results of this training session also determined whether Hitoshi Shinso would transfer over to the Hero Course or not.

September 12, 2020 by Aaron Ngo

My Hero Academia Volume 21: “Why He Gets Back Up” (Chapters 189 through 200) Manga Review. Written by Aaron Ngo.

On August 7, 2020, I started reading My Hero Academia’s Volume 21 and finished on August 8, 2020. August 8 also happens to be Endeavor’s—the newest number 1 hero and Shoto Todoroki’s father—birthday. As a result, reading this particular volume book was incredible. I have also entered manga-exclusive territory for the time being. The next few volumes—21 through 24 at least, maybe more—will be covered in My Hero Academia’s upcoming season 5. This is a spoiler warning for those who only read the anime.

September 05, 2020 by Aaron Ngo

My Hero Academia Volume 19: “School Festival” (Chapters 168 through 177) Manga Review. Written by Aaron Ngo.

On August 6, 2020, I started reading My Hero Academia’s Volume 19 and finished the volume on August 7, 2020. Based on the cover page of My Hero Academia’s Volume 19, it was clear that the next arc was aiming for a light-hearted tone. After the darkness that shrouded the “Overhaul Arc” and the huge fallout that befell all the characters involved, the bright and fun “School Festival Arc” was much-needed.

My Hero Academia Volume 18: “Bright Future” (Chapters 158 through 167) Manga Review. Written by Aaron Ngo.

On August 5, 2020, I started and finished reading My Hero Academia’s Volume 18. Volume 18: “Bright Future” started with the epic conclusion to the “Overhaul Arc” and followed with its emotional aftermath. Deku and Overhaul battled it out for Eri, giving us a beautiful action sequence and Overhaul’s backstory on why he wanted to create this quirk-less society.

My Hero Academia Volume 17: “Lemillion” (Chapters 148 through 157) Manga Review

September 05, 2020 by Aaron Ngo

My Hero Academia Volume 17: “Lemillion” (Chapters 148 through 157) Manga Review. Written by Aaron Ngo.

On August 5, 2020, I started and finished reading My Hero Academia’s Volume 17. This volume had made strides—making up for the slow pace in Volume 16: “Red Riot”—to set-up the climax of the “Overhaul Arc”. While there were valid flaws in this arc when it came to Chisaki’s Yakuza villain organization and their disinteresting members, the League of Villains’ limited involvement, and the exclusion of the female hero characters, the arc was mostly held-together by the series’ amazing ensemble cast. The characters were basically so amazing that they kept the plot from coming apart.

September 05, 2020 by Aaron Ngo

My Hero Academia Volume 16: “Red Riot” (Chapters 138 through 147) Manga Review. Written by Aaron Ngo.

On August 4, 2020, I started reading My Hero Academia’s Volume 16 and finished the manga book on August 5. While this volume continued falling into the anime chase sequence trope—losing party members one by one to “hold off enemies”—similar to Naruto’s “Sasuke Retrieval Arc”, I still found the backstories on Red Riot and Sunmaker intimately necessary, giving them the breathing room to become fleshed-out characters in their own right.

On August 4, 2020, I started and finished reading My Hero Academia’s Volume 15. This volume explores the beginning of the anime’s season 4 in a post-All Might world, where most Pro Heroes need to take super careful precautions now rather than jump into the action recklessly like All Might—or his successor Deku—would normally do.
