Too Much Happiness Book Review

August 23, 2020 by Aaron Ngo

Too Much Happiness Book Review. Written by Aaron Ngo.

On August 15, 2020, I started reading Too Much Happiness by Alice Munro and finished on August 16, 2020. Similar to the Broken Earth Trilogy—The Fifth Season, Obelisk Gate, and The Stone Sky—The Bonesetter’s Daughter, and Atonement, this novel was another Writers’ Group selection. Doing book report submissions have been a great addition to our curriculum, making us better writers and readers at the same time. This novel is a collection of short stories centered around different women looking into their past.

The God of High School Episode 7 “Anima / Force” Anime Review

August 23, 2020 by Aaron Ngo

The God of High School Episode 7 “Anima / Force” Anime Review. Written by Aaron Ngo.

The God of High School has officially kicked off the “Nationals Arc”, essentially splitting this episode into two parts. Not like the “exposition” / fight scene” split we were shown in the first two episodes, but rather a “tournament / “battle against Nox” split. Based on what’s been happening this season, I will assume the rest of the season will follow this structure to a certain extent. Well, at least until the two stories clash in the middle at some point.

Digimon Adventure REBOOT Episode 11 “The Wolf Standing Atop the Desert” Review

August 23, 2020 by Aaron Ngo

Digimon Adventure REBOOT Episode 11 “The Wolf Standing Atop the Desert” Review. Written by Aaron Ngo.

Last episode showed us the amazing MetalGreymon. This latest episode gave us WereGarurumon and more context—more accurately, rebooted context—on Matt’s loner status. While I thought Matt’s back and forth about “doing things alone” to “being a team player” was annoying, at least we learned—officially—why he was acting this way. He wanted to finish the Digimon mission as soon as possible so he can go back home and protect his little brother, T.K.

Digimon Adventure REBOOT Episode 10 “Steel-Solid Super Evolution” Review

August 15, 2020 by Aaron Ngo

Digimon Adventure REBOOT Episode 10 “Steel-Solid Super Evolution” Review. Written by Aaron Ngo.

This latest episode was outstanding! The animation on Greymon’s super evolution to MetalGreymon was phenomenal. There was decent build-up to that moment, and even when it came, I still found myself surprised that the super evolution actually happened. The flashback to my childhood when this digivolution happened in the original series’ 20th episode was too surreal.

The God of High School Episode 6 “Fear / SIX” Anime Review

August 15, 2020 by Aaron Ngo

The God of High School Episode 6 “Fear / SIX” Anime Review. Written by Aaron Ngo.

The God of High School’s latest episode finally delivered much-needed exposition and context for what’s been happening in the last five episodes while also carving the path for the “Nationals Arc” at the same time. After constant fight scenes—which were hit-or-misses—since the anime debuted, it was refreshing to have an episode where the plot was getting a proper set-up.

Oathbringer Book Review

August 15, 2020 by Aaron Ngo

Oathbringer Book Review. Written by Aaron Ngo.

From May 2020 to July 20, 2020, I read Brandon Sanderson’s Oathbringer—the third book in the Stormlight Archive. Unlike Words of Radiance—which took me roughly two weeks to read—this 1,300-page novel took about two to three months. Now I’m officially caught up with the Stormlight Archive series, waiting for the fourth book coming out at some point in November 2020. Let’s talk about what made this novel better than The Way of Kings but not as epic as Words of Radiance.

August 15, 2020 by Aaron Ngo

Pokemon Journeys: The Series Netflix Original Part 1 Review. Written by Aaron Ngo.

Pokemon is back on Netflix with a new series. Unlike the past 23-seasons of Ash and Pikachu’s adventure, this one took a new approach with a soft reboot on the series. The premise of this new show follows Ash, Pikachu, and new protagonist Goh becoming Pokemon Researchers for Professor Cerise in Vermillion City. The main goal is to research and catch as many Pokemon as possible, undergoing many investigations assigned by Professor Cerise.

Get Even Netflix Original Season 1 Review

August 15, 2020 by Aaron Ngo

Get Even Netflix Original Season 1 Review. Written by Aaron Ngo.

On August 5, 2020, I started watching the latest teen drama Get Even and finished all ten episodes on August 10. In typical teen drama fashion, the British series centered around four girls—Kitty Wei (Kim Adis), Bree Deringer (Mia McKenna-Bruce), Margot Rivers (Bethany Antonia), and Olivia Hayes (Jessica Alexander)—and their activities as D.G.M, a secret group dedicated to taking down bullies at their elite prep school.

Lucifer Netflix Original Season 4 Review

August 15, 2020 by Aaron Ngo

Lucifer Netflix Original Season 4 Review. Written by Aaron Ngo.

Lucifer—the Devil Himself—just refuses to die. I had a good time watching the hit series when Netflix saved the show from cancellation back in 2019. I binged-watched the first three seasons and had a blast with the fourth season too. I hadn’t had a chance to write this season review until recently, but at least I was on time before Season 5 Part 1 drops on August 21, 2020.

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina Netflix Original Part 3 Review. Written by Aaron Ngo.

On July 20, 2020, I started watching Chilling Adventures of Sabrina’s Part 3—season 3—and finished on July 27, 2020. While my feelings have been mixed with the first two parts of Sabrina, I thought Part 3 fixed a lot of the mistakes that plagued Part 2 in particular.

Chilling Adventures of Sabrina Netflix Original Part 2 Review. Written by Aaron Ngo.

On July 17, 2020, I started watching Chilling Adventures of Sabrina’s Part 2—season 2—and finished on July 19, 2020. With the coronavirus pandemic still ongoing, I decided to use my free time to catch up on my television shows, leading me to remember how much I enjoyed Sabrina’s Part 1 back in 2019. When I heard Part 4 would be the last season, I decided to get back into the show in order to see how it ends.

Stargirl 1x13 “Stars & S.T.R.I.P.E. Part Two” Episode Review

August 15, 2020 by Aaron Ngo

Stargirl 1x13 “Stars & S.T.R.I.P.E. Part Two” Episode Review. Written by Aaron Ngo.

The Season 1 finale picked up where “Stars & S.T.R.I.P.E. Part One” left off, with the adults being mind-controlled and rewired to follow the New America way. The episode also opened with Courtney trying to break through Pat’s mind control, reminding him that she’s his daughter. The words came right out of her mouth, giving us a well-earned payoff on how far their father-daughter relationship developed over the course of this season.

Stargirl 1x12 “Stars & S.T.R.I.P.E. Part One” Episode Review. Written by Aaron Ngo.

The Injustice Society’s plan to brainwash over a million people goes underway in the first part of the season finale. While this episode was mostly setting the table for the second part of the season finale, it was much-needed table setting to get everyone in place for what’s to come.

The Umbrella Academy Netflix Original Season 2 Review

August 08, 2020 by Aaron Ngo

The Umbrella Academy Netflix Original Season 2 Review. Written by Aaron Ngo.

On July 31, 2020, I binge-watched The Umbrella Academy’s second season. I originally was going to pace myself over the August 1st weekend, but then somewhere along the way I decided to consume season two—all ten episodes—in one sitting. I had an amazing experience watching season two than I did season one, despite both seasons having the same basic premise: stopping the Apocalypse within a set number of days.

My Hero Academia: Vigilantes Volume 6: “A Rational Man” (Episodes 36 through 44) Manga Review

August 08, 2020 by Aaron Ngo

My Hero Academia: Vigilantes Volume 6: “A Rational Man” (Episodes 36 through 44) Manga Review. Written by Aaron Ngo.

Volume 6 was spinning its wheels a bit in the first two episodes. The opener with the Feather Hats performance group and Koichi wanting the All-Might hoodie merchandise and the follow-up episode on Makoto Tsukauchi and her police detective brother Naomasa were definitely light-hearted and funny to read, but I was expecting some immediate action after what happened at the end of Volume 5. However, they phased out of the story after these episodes, so Furuhashi might’ve been tying up some loose plot strings before moving into the main story.

My Hero Academia: Vigilantes Volume 5: “Day-Tripping Down to Naniwa” (Episodes 27 through 35) Manga Review

August 08, 2020 by Aaron Ngo

My Hero Academia: Vigilantes Volume 5: “Day-Tripping Down to Naniwa” (Episodes 27 through 35) Manga Review. Written by Aaron Ngo.

According to Hideyuki Furuhashi, this volume is considered the start of a season two. When I read that sentence, it made me reconsider how Volume 4 “Family” ended in regard to Knuckleduster, and how that lead to him leaving his vigilante stuff behind with Koichi. Apparently, Knuckleduster will be leaving the picture for a while in order to help Koichi grow as a vigilante.

My Hero Academia: Vigilantes Volume 4: “Family” (Episodes 19 through 26) Manga Review. Written by Aaron Ngo.

On July 10, 2020, I started and finished my physical copy of Vigilantes’ Volume 4: “Family”. Written by Hideyuki Furuhashi and drawn by Betten Court, this prequel spin-off series offers a different perspective—the Batman perspective is what I’ll call it—on My Hero Academia’s superpowered society. While Deku and his friends are working hard to become official heroes at school and in real-life hero situations, Koichi “The Crawler”, Pop Step, and Knuckleduster instead choose to moonlight as unlicensed vigilantes.
