My Hero Academia: Vigilantes Volume 1: “I’m Here” (Episodes 1 through 5) Manga Review

August 08, 2020 by Aaron Ngo

My Hero Academia: Vigilantes Volume 1: “I’m Here” (Episodes 1 through 5) Manga Review. Written by Aaron Ngo.

After I finished reading Demon Slayer on July 5, 2020, I decided to read My Hero Academia: Vigilantes next. The decision to read this manga came across as a convenient opportunity when my cousin picked up volumes 2 and 3 at a random garage sale for $5 total and gave them to me. Having the physical copies forced me to buy Volume 1 on Amazon Prime. Then on July 7, 2020, I started and finished Volume 1 of Vigilantes, written by Hideyuki Furuhashi and drawn by Betten Court.

Digimon Adventure REBOOT Episode 9 “The Ultimate Digimon Attacks” Review

August 08, 2020 by Aaron Ngo

Digimon Adventure REBOOT Episode 9 “The Ultimate Digimon Attacks” Review. Written by Aaron Ngo.

Let’s start with the Tai and Matt issue. The Reboot is clearly trying to make Tai and Matt the stars of the show again, giving little to no love for the other DigiDestined. On top of that, only Agumon and Gabumon were the only Digimon to digivolve in the episode. Nobody except Sora and Piyomon even tried, and Piyomon being attacked before she could do it was super disrespectful. I had to air out that negativity before moving onto the positive side, which does exist in this episode.

The God of High School Episode 5 “Ronde / Hound” Anime Review

August 08, 2020 by Aaron Ngo

The God of High School Episode 5 “Ronde / Hound” Anime Review. Written by Aaron Ngo.

While watching this episode and eating my lunch at the same time, I was having mixed feelings. First, the fight scene between Han Daewi and Jin Mori came way too early in my opinion, but I believe this is because the second half will cover the “Nationals Arc” based on the characters we saw at the end of the episode.

The God of High School Episode 4 “Marriage / Bonds” Anime Review

August 02, 2020 by Aaron Ngo

The God of High School Episode 4 “Marriage / Bonds” Anime Review. Written by Aaron Ngo.

The God of High School’s pacing took an unexpected turn. As a reader of the Webtoon, I was quite taken back with the events of the latest episode. While I wasn’t a fan of the “Wedding Arc” in the Webtoon—because “the pacing / buildup was out of control”—I still thought the episode had a better handle on this arc up until the brutal ending of the episode (Ngo, GOH “Tournament Preliminaries Arc” Review).

Little Fires Everywhere Hulu Original Season 1 Review

August 01, 2020 by Aaron Ngo

Little Fires Everywhere Hulu Original Season 1 Review. Written by Aaron Ngo.

In short, Little Fires Everywhere was targeted at a specific demography, and how their small suburban world could easily be challenged—to the point of unraveling—when met with the notion that they aren’t as progressive or open-minded as they think they are. It was the best part of the show, especially given the times with the Black Lives Matter 2020 Movement still happening right now. Yes, it’s still happening right now even if it’s not trending on social media.

Black Lightning Season 3 Review

August 01, 2020 by Aaron Ngo

Black Lightning Season 3 Review. Written by Aaron Ngo.

I finished Black Lightning’s third season—16 episodes—on June 19, 2020 (Juneteenth). Unlike the previous two seasons, Black Lightning’s latest season kicked off with the ASA taking over Freeland through military occupation. After the season two finale cliffhanger, I wasn’t expecting things to escalate to such a terrifying degree.

Love, Victor Hulu Original Season 1 Review

August 01, 2020 by Aaron Ngo

Love, Victor Hulu Original Season 1 Review. Written by Aaron Ngo.

On June 21, 2020, I binge-watched Love, Victor—the television series successor to 2018 film Love, Simon—with my siblings. The 10-episode first season was released on June 19, 2020 (Juneteenth). We watched it from beginning to end in one night, and I’d like to share some thoughts. The ride wasn’t completely smooth, but the series—centered around Victor (Michael Cimino)—was definitely an improvement over the movie.

Stargirl 1x11 “Shining Knight” Episode Review

August 01, 2020 by Aaron Ngo

Stargirl 1x11 “Shining Knight” Episode Review.

Stargirl finally addressed Justin the Janitor being the Shining Knight and the identity of Courtney’s father in one fell swoop in this episode. My theory about Justin the Janitor (Mark Ashworth) being Courtney’s father was officially debunked, but that guess was a long-shot anyway. Courtney’s strong belief that Starman was her father—the one thing driving her superhero career—was also debunked in this episode.

Digimon Adventure REBOOT Episode 8 “The Children’s Attack on the Fortress” Review

August 01, 2020 by Aaron Ngo

Digimon Adventure REBOOT Episode 8 “The Children’s Attack on the Fortress” Review. Written by Aaron Ngo.

Digimon Adventure 2020 Reboot finally hit some decent plot and drove it home with some much-needed action. Matt and Gabumon made their grand return in this episode and joined up with the rest of the DigiDestined, as they prepared to lay siege on a heavily guarded fortress. Izzy is still separated from the group in this episode, but he has been updating them regularly on what’s been going on in Tokyo. Hopefully, Izzy and Kabuterimon join up with their friends soon enough in the Digital World.

Digimon Adventure REBOOT Episode 7 “That Boy is Joe Kido” Review

July 26, 2020 by Aaron Ngo

Digimon Adventure REBOOT Episode 7 “That Boy is Joe Kido” Review. Written by Aaron Ngo.

The Digimon Adventure 2020 episodes gets better and better with each passing week. While Izzy and Tentomon are stuck in the Network World, we caught a glimpse of Kari at home watching Tokyo fall apart without the Internet. I’m curious how she’ll play into the series later on with Gatomon and the Holy Digimon lore. Anyway, that was the only sneak peek we got of the bigger plot, as the rest of the episode was dedicated to the latest DigiDestined kid: Joe Kido!

The Umbrella Academy Netflix Original Season 1 Review. Written by Aaron Ngo.

Hello, everyone! To prepare myself—and yourselves—for the season 2 drop on July 31, 2020, I decided to rewatch the first season and write this review. On July 14, 2020, I hit the play button on Netflix and didn’t stop watching until July 16. From what I remembered last year on 2019, I didn’t have the best time with this show.

Stargirl 1x10 “Brainwave Jr.” Episode Review

July 26, 2020 by Aaron Ngo

Stargirl 1x10 “Brainwave Jr.” Episode Review. Written by Aaron Ngo.

Wow. The latest episode of Stargirl broke me emotionally. I cannot believe superhero fans are sleeping on this show. “Brainwave Jr.” managed to break the Dugan-Whitmore family, remind us Brainwave (Christopher James Baker) was the most ruthless villain on this show—not Icicle (Neil Jackson)—and the team fight scene against The Dragon King (Nelson Lee) and his minions was the best one in the series thus far.

Demon Slayer follows Tanjiro Kamado who finds his family slaughtered except for his younger sister Nezuko, who had been turned into a demon. However, Nezuko had retained enough humanity to not eat humans. The God of High School Episode 3 “Wisdom / Kingdom” Anime Review

The God of High School Episode 3 “Wisdom / Kingdom” Anime Review. Written by Aaron Ngo.

Picking up where episode 2 left off, The God of High School has to handle Jin Mori interfering with the match between Gang Manseok and Go Gambo. While the anime did handle Jin Mori’s situation somewhat differently from what happened in the Webtoon, I thought the result was still satisfying.

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba “Sunrise Countdown Arc” (Chapters 184 through 205) Manga Review

July 26, 2020 by Aaron Ngo

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba “Sunrise Countdown Arc” (Chapters 184 through 205) Manga Review. Written by Aaron Ngo.

On July 4, 2020 (The Floyd of July), I started the “Sunrise Countdown Arc”—the second half of the “Final Battle Arc”—and finished on July 5, 2020. I have read the entire Demon Slayer manga (205 chapters). What a great way to celebrate the holiday weekend. It was a beautiful series until that lackluster ending, but I’d still recommend reading Demon Slayer. Before I dive into the ending though, let’s discuss everything else that was pretty satisfying about the arc.

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba “Infinity Castle Arc” (Chapters 138 through 183) Manga Review

July 26, 2020 by Aaron Ngo

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba “Infinity Castle Arc” (Chapters 138 through 183) Manga Review. Written by Aaron Ngo.

On July 3, 2020, I started the “Infinity Castle Arc”—the first half of the “Final Battle Arc”—and finished on July 4, 2020 (Floyd of July). Instead of celebrating America’s “freedom”, I chose to spend my time reading Demon Slayer and watching these characters fight for actual freedom against Muzan Kibutsuji, the main antagonist of the whole series. How this sub-arc played out was emotionally heavy, banking on the relationships that we had already seen or were alluded to in all the previous arcs.

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba “Hashira Training Arc” (Chapters 128 through 137) Manga Review

July 26, 2020 by Aaron Ngo

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba “Hashira Training Arc” (Chapters 128 through 137) Manga Review. Written by Aaron Ngo.

I started and finished the “Hashira (Pillar) Training Arc”—the tenth story arc of the manga series—on July 3, 2020. I thought this arc was a nice break—the pre-game—before the “Final Battle Arc”, the last arc of the Demon Slayer series. This arc centered around the Pillars and lower ranked Demon Slayers undergoing intense training sessions aimed to improve their abilities and maybe awaken the Demon Slayer marks like Tanjiro Kamado.

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba “Swordsmith Village Arc” (Chapters 100 through 127) Manga Review

July 26, 2020 by Aaron Ngo

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba “Swordsmith Village Arc” (Chapters 100 through 127) Manga Review. Written by Aaron Ngo.

On July 2, 2020, I started reading the “Swordsmith Village Arc”—the ninth story arc of the manga series—and finished on July 3, 2020. The story arc centered around Tanjiro going to the Swordsmith Village to replace his sword—which was destroyed in the “Entertainment District Arc”—after Hotaru Haganezuka refused to make him a new one, since this would be the third or fourth time Tanjiro had destroyed one of his creations. I had lost track of how many times Tanjiro broke his sword, but it was indeed a lot.

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba “Entertainment District Arc” (Chapters 70 through 99) Manga Review. Written by Aaron Ngo.

On June 30, 2020, I started Demon Slayer’s “Entertainment District Arc”—the eighth story arc of the manga series—and finished it on July 2, 2020. This arc centered around Tanjiro, Nezuko, Inosuke, and Zenitsu teaming up with the Sound Pillar Uzui on a mission trip to the Entertainment District, helping Uzui find his missing wives—yes, plural—who were investigating demons being reported in that area.
