Black Lightning Season 2 Review

June 21, 2020 by Aaron Ngo

Black Lightning Season 2 Review. Written by Aaron Ngo.

On June 5, 2020, I started Black Lightning’s second season. Five days later, I finished. Unlike the other Arrowverse superhero shows like The Flash and Arrow, Black Lightning always found ways to ground the series through real-life consequences. While I enjoyed season 1 more for its tighter writing and fast pace regarding the main plot on Tobias White (Marvin Williams III) and the ASA, I commend season 2 for doing a remarkable job—for the most part—with its multiple arc structure.

Black Lightning Season 1 Review

June 14, 2020 by Aaron Ngo

Black Lightning Season 1 Review. Written by Aaron Ngo.

On June 2, 2020, I started watching Black Lightning’s first season on Netflix. I needed something enjoyable while also educational during the Black Lives Matter 2020 Movement, and I had been on a superhero genre binge lately if y’all had been keeping up with my blog updates on The Flash, Stargirl, Supergirl, and unOrdinary. So, watching the first season seemed inevitable for me, especially now that Black Lightning was officially a part of the Arrowverse following the Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover event.

Stargirl 1x04 “Wildcat” Episode Review

June 14, 2020 by Aaron Ngo

Stargirl 1x04 “Wildcat” Episode Review. Written by Aaron Ngo.

This episode opened with a flashback scene—three months before the present day—centered around Yolanda Montez (Yvette Monreal). Yolanda had been a background character since the “Pilot”, but Courtney had been standing up for her against the bullies in all the previous episodes since she arrived in Blue Valley.

Supergirl Season 5 Review

June 14, 2020 by Aaron Ngo

Supergirl Season 5 Review. Written by Aaron Ngo.

Due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic, season five was shortened. However, the storytelling problems with this season existed long before the non-fictional pandemic. The problems even existed before the Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover event. Let’s start with the few positives I enjoyed first, before diving into the numerous negatives I experienced finishing the season on Netflix.

unOrdinary “Joker Arc” (Episode 132 through Episode 155) Webtoon Review

June 14, 2020 by Aaron Ngo

unOrdinary “Joker Arc” (Episode 132 through Episode 155) Webtoon Review. Written by Aaron Ngo.

I finished reading season one on June 1, 2020. The first 155 episodes—out of currently 183—were amazing. After the events of the “Capture Arc”, John had enough. He declared that he will bring down the social hierarchy, warning Arlo to enjoy his throne while he still had it. During this arc, John—under his secret identity of “Joker”—defeated Blyke and Cecile mercilessly with their own abilities. Remi knew she was next on Joker’s Royal hit list and prepared herself to stop his rampage. John was no longer the main protagonist I thought he was.

unOrdinary “Capture Arc” (Episode 119 through Episode 131) Webtoon Review. Written by Aaron Ngo.

unOrdinary was preparing us for its season one endgame. This arc centered around a group of mid-tier students kidnapping a powerless Seraphina and punishing her for what she had done to them via the social hierarchy. Arlo and Elaine lead the search for Seraphina while John conducted his own solo search as the school vigilante, donning the black mask and attacking many students—including Isen—in order to copy their abilities.

unOrdinary “Vigilante 2 Arc” (Episode 115 through Episode 118) Webtoon Review. Written by Aaron Ngo.

On May 31, 2020, I read the spiritual successor to the “Vigilante Arc”. While a short arc like the “Trio Trouble Arc”, this became easily one of my favorite arcs for the plot progression regarding Rei’s killer. The side-character trio—Remi, Isen, and Blyke—embarked on their second mission. As X-Rei, Remi tracked down an ability drug dealer named Alana to figure out the identity of her supplier. Blyke and Isen stayed hidden on rooftops to provide backup.

unOrdinary “Change Arc” (Episode 100 through Episode 114) Webtoon Review

unOrdinary “Change Arc” (Episode 100 through Episode 114) Webtoon Review. Written by Aaron Ngo.

Reading this on May 31, 2020, I thought this arc was pretty frustrating. John’s secret keeping will definitely blow up in his face at some point. However, Seraphina’s secret was exposed first. Since Arlo didn’t allow Cecile to publish the story about Seraphina being powerless, she leaked the story instead, spreading flyers of the story throughout the school. This caused students to attack Seraphina and John throughout the arc.

unOrdinary “Vigilante Arc” (Episode 93 through Episode 99) Webtoon Review. Written by Aaron Ngo.

Well. I officially like Remi, Islen, and Blyke as their own thing. They need a spin-off Webtoon series pronto. While most readers would be put off with the delay of John and Seraphina, I actually didn’t mind whenever the story centered on this particular trio. Their stories eventually intersect with the other characters too, as the arcs weren’t random at least.

unOrdinary “Secrets Arc” (Episode 77 through Episode 92) Webtoon Review. Written by Aaron Ngo.

I had a good time with this arc. Seraphina went back to school after her month-long suspension without her abilities, and John was forced to move into the boys’ dorms for protection. Despite the significant changes in their lives, John and Seraphina tried to keep things as normal as possible. However, Seraphina was still feeling concerned about John’s recent change in behavior.

unOrdinary “Rage Arc” (Episode 67 through Episode 76) Webtoon Review

June 07, 2020 by Aaron Ngo

unOrdinary “Rage Arc” (Episode 67 through Episode 76) Webtoon Review. Written by Aaron Ngo.

unOrdinary’s “Rage Arc” was action-driven. The eleventh arc centered around a group of unknown individuals trying to kidnap Seraphina. The scary part was that they nearly succeeded. They stalked and ambushed her with a drug that suppressed her powers. The scene was intense, and the stab wound wasn’t a joke either. I was feeling the suspense and Seraphina’s terror. Episodes 67 through 69 dealt with the attack, and how Seraphina was able to escape to John’s house.

unOrdinary “Aftermath Arc” (Episode 59 through Episode 66) Webtoon Review

unOrdinary “Aftermath Arc” (Episode 59 through Episode 66) Webtoon Review. Written by Aaron Ngo.

unOrdinary’s “Aftermath Arc” dealt with… well, the aftermath of what happened between John and Arlo in the “Monster Arc”. Episode 59 showed Arlo going to the infirmary—for the first time ever—which sparked rumors getting spread around at school. This episode also revealed the Wellston’s school staff knew about John’s abilities and played along with him “being crippled” to keep the peace. I thought showing the staff have a conversation about Arlo and John was much needed exposition.

John and Arlo finally confront each other on the battlefield, and we learned what John’s ability was. Before we dive into that though, let’s talk about Seraphina first and how she stood up for herself.

unOrdinary “Trio Trouble Arc” (Episode 48 through Episode 50) Webtoon Review. Written by Aaron Ngo.

“Trio Trouble Arc” focused on three side-characters—Remi, Islen, and Blyke—and their trip to Kovoro Mall, the same shopping mall John and Seraphina visited near the start of the series. Blyke and Islen wanted to take Remi there to see a romance movie in order to cheer her up. They visited the mall, shopped for stuff, went to see the movie, and then they visited the ability gauge booth hoping to get Remi a free gift.

unOrdinary "True Colours Arc" (Episode 40 through Episodes 47) Webtoon Review. Written by Aaron Ngo.

The seventh arc of the series centered around John and his secrets. Without Seraphina around for support, the increased bullying and lack of understanding about Seraphina’s sudden lack of communication online drove John to remember his past. John’s physical appearance even started to change—the hair gel was gone and his eyes were glowing yellow! John’s “True Colours” were revealed.

The Flash Season 6 Part 2 Review

June 07, 2020 by Aaron Ngo

The Flash Season 6 Part 2 Review. Written by Aaron Ngo.

Taking place after Crisis on Infinite Earths, Barry and Team Flash must deal with the fallout of the cosmic event. There was a lot of rebooting happening in this season to accommodate the new changes—like Supergirl and Superman living on the same Earth as them now. They also had rebooted metahuman villains—like a gender-swapped Mirror Master and a recasted Doctor Light—to fight.

Stargirl 1x03 "Icicle" Episode Review

June 07, 2020 by Aaron Ngo

Stargirl 1x03 “Icicle” Episode Review. Written by Aaron Ngo.

The third episode of the first season raised the stakes. Appropriately titled “Icicle”, this episode devoted time to Jordan Mahkent (Neil Jackson). The “Prologue” scene—a flashback scene to eight years ago—showed Jordan losing his wife to cancer and promising her that he’ll fulfill their villainous dream—even if it meant destroying anyone who got in the way. It was literally her last words to Icicle.

Stargirl 1x02 "S.T.R.I.P.E." Episode Review. Written by Aaron Ngo.

On May 25, 2020, I watched the second episode of Stargirl with high expectations. After the credits rolled, I found myself excited about the show’s creative direction. Also, The CW and DC Universe should’ve released the first two episodes at once as a two-part “Pilot” episode. However, that may be a moot point considering how people—including myself—binge-watch television shows. This episode did succeed though in establishing what kind of show Stargirl will be moving forward.

Grey's Anatomy Season 16 Review

Grey's Anatomy Season 16 Review. Written by Aaron Ngo.

I rewatched most of season 16 with my siblings during the Memorial Day 2020 weekend, and decided that I had some things to say about it. In my professional medical opinion, the latest season of Grey’s Anatomy was a mess. I wish I could blame the coronavirus pandemic for what happened to the season, but the story arcs and character development already went astray before their episode count was cut.

The Flash Season 6 Part 1 Review

The Flash Season 6 Part 1 Review. Written by Aaron Ngo.

The Flash season 6 hit Netflix on May 20, 2020, which meant I could finally binge-watch the season on my own time. Due to the Crisis on Infinite Earths crossover event, this season was structured differently from previous seasons. Season 6 was broken into two parts similar to a graphic novel, according to the showrunners. This review will tackle the first part of season 6, known as the “Pre-Crisis Arc”.
