unOrdinary "Project Partners Arc" (Episode 36 through Episodes 39) Webtoon Review

May 30, 2020 by Aaron Ngo

unOrdinary "Project Partners Arc" (Episode 36 through Episodes 39) Webtoon Review. Written by Aaron Ngo.

This short arc took place in a flashback to when John and Seraphina were assigned as each other’s partner for a three-part class project. They weren’t best friends yet, but these episodes showed how they eventually warmed up to each other. I also liked how this flashback occurred naturally as Seraphina was studying at home in the present day.

unOrdinary "Suspension Arc" (Episode 29 through Episodes 35) Webtoon Review

May 30, 2020 by Aaron Ngo

unOrdinary "Suspension Arc" (Episode 29 through Episodes 35) Webtoon Review. Written by Aaron Ngo.

The “Suspension Arc” challenged John and Seraphina’s friendship, taking place directly after the “Investigation Arc” and during Seraphina’s month-long suspension. It was hard and difficult to see them separated, and how the social hierarchy of this world was doing whatever they could to tear them apart. Then there was Gavin—the bully John threw out the window—from the “Beginning Arc”, who just wanted to take advantage of the situation. Arlo was also still determined to learn John’s secrets and sever his ties with Seraphina.

unOrdinary "Investigation Arc" (Episode 18 through Episodes 28) Webtoon Review

May 30, 2020 by Aaron Ngo

unOrdinary "Investigation Arc" (Episode 18 through Episodes 28) Webtoon Review. Written by Aaron Ngo.

This arc had started making the mystery of John Doe a part of the series’ plot. In the aftermath of the “Turf War Arc”, Arlo—jerk boy—started growing curious about John Doe’s past and what he may be hiding from the rest of the school. The background news and activities of EMBER—evil group that targets vigilantes—were also creeping toward the surface, as more and more vigilantes were getting serially killed for being heroes.

unOrdinary "Turf War Arc" (Episode 13 through Episode 17) Webtoon Review

May 30, 2020 by Aaron Ngo

unOrdinary "Turf War Arc" (Episode 13 through Episode 17) Webtoon Review. Written by Aaron Ngo.

As I continue to write these Webtoon reviews for unOrdinary, I’ve noticed how short the arcs have been so far. This series has very slow plot progression, but the author is making up for the lack of plot with stellar character progression. In this “Turf War Arc”, main protagonist John Doe took a backseat while Seraphina stood in the spotlight. She was talked into playing a Turf War with a rival school. The author didn’t go into the specifics of what this event was, but I read it as informal street fighting with superpowers.

unOrdinary "Kovoro Mall Arc" (Episode 8 through Episode 12) Webtoon Review

unOrdinary “Kovoro Mall Arc” (Episode 8 through Episode 12) Webtoon Review. Written by Aaron Ngo.

unOrdinary had officially caught my attention. For those who hadn’t read my review on the “Beginning Arc”, the link is here. The series follows main character John Doe navigating a superpowered school—Wellston Private High School—without any powers of his own. After reading both the “Beginning Arc” and the “Kovoro Mall Arc”, I have some thoughts and opinions on what isn’t being told in this series. The beauty of the Webtoon is what’s not being said.

unOrdinary "Beginning Arc" (Prologue through Episodes 7) Webtoon Review

unOrdinary “Beginning Arc” (Prologue through Episode 7) Webtoon Review. Written by Aaron Ngo.

After taking my well-deserved break from reading and reviewing The God of High School’s first five volumes, I decided to read the Webtoon series unOrdinary—written by uru-chan—for the time being until the author finishes the final volume of G.O.H. Last I checked, there were about 180 episodes of unOrdinary so far. I’m thinking it shouldn’t be too much of a challenge to catch up, give or take the weekly episodes that come out on Thursdays.

The God of High School: Volume 5: Ragnarok: “World Tournament Arc” (Episodes 217 to 307) Webtoon Review

May 23, 2020 by Aaron Ngo

The God of High School “World Tournament Arc” (Episodes 217 to 307) Webtoon Review. Written by Aaron Ngo.

Before I dive into my thoughts on the “World Tournament Arc”, also known as Volume 5: Ragnarök, I need to take a minute and process the Webtoon as a whole. The God of High School had been a wild rollercoaster for the past hundred chapters or so. Devoting two weeks of my life to this series was a true blessing. There were moments when I thought about quitting, but after reading this volume in two days (May 19 to May 20, 2020), I found myself crying at the ending and truly loving The God of High School more than ever.

The God of High School “World Training Arc” (Episodes 173 through 216) Webtoon Review. Written by Aaron Ngo.

The God of High School’s “World Training Arc”, also known as Volume 4: World Competition, was an interesting binge-read. I started and finished the arc on May 18, 2020 during my day-off. For those who had read my Webtoon Review on the “Second Great War Arc”, I have some answers for you regarding Jin Mo-Ri’s disappearance.

The God of High School “Second Great War Arc” (Episodes 153 through 172) Webtoon Review. Written by Aaron Ngo.

The God of High School had been an emotional rollercoaster so far. For those unaware, I had read volumes 1, 2, 2.5, and 3 all in one week’s time. I absorbed over a hundred episodes in seven days, and I thought I should say a few words on how the binge-reading went. So, let’s start there before I dive into my thoughts on “Second Great War Arc”, the ending to Volume 3: Adventure.

The God of High School: Volume 3: Adventure: "Sage Realm Arc" (Episodes 119 through 152) Webtoon Review

The God of High School “Sage Realm Arc” (Episodes 119 through 152) Webtoon Review. Written by Aaron Ngo.

The God of High School’s “Sage Realm Arc” misfired about halfway through, but they sort-of stuck the landing for the next arc. I was disappointed to see how the whole structure strongly resembled Naruto’s “Fourth Shinobi World War Arc”, but before I lose myself listing off the negatives that happened, let’s talk about the positives at least, starting with the evil organization that was working deep in the shadows during the first two volumes of the series.

Stargirl 1x01 "Pilot" Episode Review

May 23, 2020 by Aaron Ngo

Stargirl 1x01 Review. Written by Aaron Ngo.

Just when I thought I was burned out from watching superhero shows, Stargirl’s “Pilot” episode dropped on the DC Universe Streaming Service. There was no turning back for me after my initial viewing on May 18, 2020. In my professional—and definitely more personal—opinion, Stargirl has the potential to become the next big superhero to hit the mainstream due to the television series being streamed on The CW alongside the rest of the Arrowverse shows like The Flash and Supergirl.

Atonement Movie Review

Atonement Movie Review. Written by Aaron Ngo.

Synopsis: The movie is set during 1934 on a summer’s day, where main protagonist Briony Tallis (Saoirse Ronan at age 13, Romola Garai at age 18, and Vanessa Redgrave at age 77) misinterprets the romantic intentions of her older sister Cecelia (Keira Knightley) and son of a servant Robbie Turner (James McAvoy from X-Men: First Class) as something more malicious than romantic. This misinterpretation caused a ripple in all their lives during the carnage and chaos of World War II.

The story is centered around Ruth Young, a Chinese-American ghost writer working in San Francisco, and her mother LuLing, who was losing her memories to dementia. Part One centered around Ruth and her life in the third-person POV, Part Two centered around LuLing and her past—written and translated—in the first-person POV, and Part Three returned back to Ruth Young, who needed to process what she learned about her mother—and the mysterious Precious Auntie—in Part Two.

Edgedancer Book Review

May 23, 2020 by Aaron Ngo

Edgedancer Book Review. Written by Aaron Ngo.

I decided to pick up Brandon Sanderson’s Arcanum Unbounded—a novel containing his Cosmere Collection of short stories—again. I hadn’t read from the collection since last year—2019—when I read Mistborn: Secret History. This time, I revisited the collection to read Edgedancer, a novella that bridged Words of Radiance and Oathbringer—the second and third books of the Stormlight Archive.

Words of Radiance Book Review

Words of Radiance Book Review. Written by Aaron Ngo.

Unlike reading The Way of Kings, Words of Radiance was a way more enjoyable reading experience and took me less time to finish despite the sequel being 300 pages longer. Initially, I believed it was going to take me another four to five months to finish reading this novel based on my experience with The Way of Kings, but luckily, I was proven wrong.

I Am Not Okay With This Netflix Original Season One Review

May 18, 2020 by Aaron Ngo

I Am Not Okay With This Season One Review. Written by Aaron Ngo.

I Am Not Okay With This—directed by Jonathan Entwistle—is a coming-of-age story and a superhero origin story rolled into one. Sydney’s life seemed normally awkward until she developed superpowers that she couldn’t possibly understand or control on her own. So, it wasn’t exactly Carrie or The Breakfast Club. There was an episode—my favorite one out of the series so far—where the characters had to do a The Breakfast Club-like mission during Saturday detention.

Final Fantasy 7 Remake Video Game Review

Final Fantasy 7 Remake Video Game Review. Written by Aaron Ngo

This classic video game revival was a long time coming, but FF7 Remake had finally arrived in April 2020. I purchased the digital copy during that weekend and casually played throughout the Quarantine month. My experience with the original video game was pretty outstanding to say the least, but this remake heightened everything—the characters, plots, graphics, combat, and world-building—to grander levels.

The God of High School “Story of Tae-Jin Arc” (Episodes 113 through 118) Webtoon Review. Written by Aaron Ngo.

This was a short arc—only six episodes—but it had a decent backstory that tied into the present day. The “Story of Tae-Jin Arc”, also known as Volume 2.5: Story of Tae-Jin, gave us greater insight into Tae-Jin’s background with his original squadron, the Re-Taekwondo Force and their last mission to stop a potential nuke in North Korea.

The God of High School broke its power scaling—in fabulous DBZ fashion—during the “Nationals Arc”, also known as Volume 2: The National Competition. The world-building, the concept of GP (“God Power”), the Judges, The Six, and Jin Mo-Ri’s background / motives were explained and explored during this arc.
