May 17, 2020 by Aaron Ngo

The God of High School “Tournament Preliminaries Arc” (episodes 5 through 41) Webtoon Review. Written by Aaron Ngo.

Here’s also a quick synopsis on G.O.H. for those who don’t know: The series is drawn and written by Park Yong-Je. The God of High School started in 2011 and it is still an ongoing series centered around a boy named Jin Mo-Ri entering the God of High School, a world martial arts tournament that will grant the winner a wish, no questions asked.

Calamity Book Review

May 09, 2020 by Aaron Ngo

Calamity Book Review. Written by Aaron Ngo.

Calamity is the final book in Brandon Sanderson’s superhero trilogy. After the events of the first two books, David Charleston is ready to end the war between Epics and non-Epics that Calamity—an Epic himself and not just a life-changing event—started. In this final installment of the series, David decides to forgo his “killing Epics” mindset in order to save Prof, who had succumbed to the darkness. Prof is the main antagonist of the novel, and David’s willing to do anything to save his mentor / friend, even if it’s just easier to kill him.

Dangerous Lies Netflix Original Movie Review

May 09, 2020 by Aaron Ngo

Dangerous Lies Movie Review. Written by Aaron Ngo.

I decided to watch this Netflix Original out of boredom and found myself… confused that a movie this poorly constructed actually exists. I cannot start with what the movie is about, but not because for spoilers, because the plot doesn’t make sense. Let’s start with the opening scene and move awkwardly from there.

The God of High School: Volume 1: A Match With Gods: "Introduction Arc" (Episodes 1 through 4) Webtoon Review

May 09, 2020 by Aaron Ngo

The God of High School “Introduction Arc” (episodes 1 through 4) Webtoon Review. Written by Aaron Ngo.

The God of High School is my first Webtoon experience. Until I started doing research for a friend’s writing, I didn’t even know the Webtoon genre existed. I was also hunting for new material to absorb and heard this series was similar to Dragon Ball Z, so that was enough to convince me. After reading the first arc, which consisted of four episodes, I have decided to invest and have not regretted it. I’m currently on the “Tournament Preliminaries Arc”, so I’ll keep y’all posted on these reviews.

Marvel's Jessica Jones Netflix Original Season Three Review

May 04, 2020 by Aaron Ngo

Marvel’s Jessica Jones Season Three Review. Written by Aaron Ngo.

It took me a year or so and a 2020 pandemic, but I forced myself to watch the final season—thirteen episodes—of Jessica Jones. Season three had a lot of work to do considering how uneven season two was. It was also the final season to air out of all the Netflix Marvel series, so it was also the ending to a small universe.

Firefight Book Review

May 04, 2020 by Aaron Ngo

Firefight Book Review. Written by Aaron Ngo.

The second novel of The Reckoners series didn’t suffer the “boring middle” issue that most trilogies experience. Taking place after Steelheart’s death, David Charleston and the Reckoners were summoned to Babylon Restored, formerly known as Manhattan, by its ruler Regalia, an Epic with water-based abilities. She summoned them by sending other low-level Epics to cause havoc in Newcago.

The Way of Kings Book Review

April 26, 2020 by Aaron Ngo

The Way of Kings Book Review. Written by Aaron Ngo.

When people talk about the greatest fantasy series, they usually find a way to bring up Lord of the Rings or Game of Thrones. Okay. Maybe not Game of Thrones anymore, but the point I’m trying to make is that another epic fantasy series needs to be talked about. The Way of Kings, written by Brandon Sanderson and published in 2010, is the first book—out of a planned ten-book saga—in a series called the Stormlight Archives.

Steelheart Book Review

April 26, 2020 by Aaron Ngo

Steelheart Book Review. Written by Aaron Ngo.

Steelheart was an enjoyable book to read, not the strongest of Brandon Sanderson’s novels, but it was geared toward a younger audience. The superhero genre was a nice change of pace from Sanderson’s epic fantasy books, but also almost borderline cliché at points due to how overused superheroes have been lately. This was no fault of Sanderson but more on the genre itself.

Digimon Adventure REBOOT Episode 3 "And to the Digital World" Review

April 26, 2020 by Aaron Ngo

Digimon Adventure REBOOT Episode 3 Review. Written by Aaron Ngo.

The first 3 episodes were pretty fantastic. They were set-up as a three-part arc that paid homage to the Digimon Adventure: Our War Game. The beginning of episode 3 swiftly executed an amazing fight scene between Omnimon and Argomon that ended the threat on Tokyo. While Omnimon’s introduction into the main series may have seemed early, at least his exit was just as quick. After that part ended, the rest of the episode centered around Tai and Izzy getting ready for… SUMMER CAMP!

Code 8 Movie Review. Written by Aaron Ngo.

Code 8 is a Canadian science-fiction / action / superhero movie—not a Netflix Original despite it streaming on that platform—starring cousins Stephen Amell and Robbie Amell, who are really familiar with the superhero genre. The film is written and directed by Jeff Chan.

Digimon Adventure REBOOT Episode 2 "War Game" Review

Digimon Adventure REBOOT Episode 2 “War Game” Review. Written by Aaron Ngo.

After a strong first episode that jumpstarted the reboot, the second episode delivered with Tai and Matt as they teamed up to stop the Digimon causing havoc on the Internet. Episode two had raised the stakes considerably with an American missile being launched at Tokyo; a very similar threat that was presented in the original Digimon movie, Our War Game!

My Hero Academia Season 4 Anime Review

April 08, 2020 by Aaron Ngo

My Hero Academia Season 4 Anime Review. Written by Aaron Ngo.

My Hero Academia Season Four has recently concluded and I don’t think it’s a stretch to say: BEST SEASON YET. The central theme of the season is “Growth” for the characters. Character development was prioritized and broken down into three distinct arcs that made everyone love / reevaluate this overcast of characters.

A 25-episode season had made the pacing balanced and fast at the same time… that’s a difficult thing to make work, but My Hero Academia is always stepping up their game.

Digimon Adventure REBOOT Episode 1 "Tokyo Digital Crisis" Review

April 07, 2020 by Aaron Ngo

Digimon Adventure REBOOT Episode 1 Review. Written by Aaron Ngo.

Digimon Adventure has made a comeback to save us from the digital virus plaguing our world. The reboot exceeded my expectations, and yes I’ll be watching weekly to regain my digital spirit. Episode 1 has all the original Digi Destined—including Kari—appear, but this series is taking a different approach to the character introductions with only a few selected—Tai and Izzy—taking the spotlight in the pilot episode. Their friendship was underrated in the original series.

The Stone Sky Book Review

April 07, 2020 by Aaron Ngo

The Stone Sky Book Review. Written by Aaron Ngo.

Mother and daughter start to conflict as the trilogy draws to a close. Essun and Nassun, after two books of not being together, reunite in an unexpected manner as they race to utilize the Obelisks to either save or end the world. The payoff to their reunion had this sadness that was perfectly conveyed—because I cried. Before I dive deeper into my cry, let’s talk about the story itself.

The Obelisk Gate Book Review

April 07, 2020 by Aaron Ngo

The Obelisk Gate Book Review. Written by Aaron Ngo.

The Obelisk Gate is the second book in the Broken Earths trilogy, written by N.K. Jemisin. While most middle books are sluggish or “spinning the wheels”, this second novel had more of my attention mostly because of… Nassun, Essun’s daughter. While Essun’s role was crucial to the book’s plot, Nassun’s POV had more heart and intrigue involved, but more on that later… we have to talk about Essun first because she’s the main character.

The Fifth Season Book Review

April 07, 2020 by Aaron Ngo

The Fifth Season Book Review. Written by Aaron Ngo.

In N.K. Jemisin’s The Fifth Season, there was a lot of exposition told through three POVs—Damaya, Synete, and Essun—in addition to two glossaries at the end of the novel to recap all the information we learned in the novel. Also, there was an unknown fourth narrator—an entertaining and twisted one—too telling the women’s perspectives, but saying more would spoil the entire book. But, Jemisin already did this by telling us the world ends in the Prologue. Yes, there is mystery in this novel packed with exposition.

Fate/stay night Heaven's Feel II. Lost Butterfly Anime Movie Review

Fate/stay night Heaven's Feel II. Lost Butterfly Anime Movie Review. Written by Aaron Ngo.

This movie was released around March 2019, a follow-up to Heaven’s Feel I. Prestige Flower from 2018. I searched for this movie on-and-off throughout 2019 post theater premieres, but I never managed to find it until February 29 on Leap Day. Oddly enough, I discovered the whole movie (high-definition and English subbed) on Facebook. The movie had a lot of focus on Sakura, the main heroine of this Fate route, which was lacking a bit in the first movie.

Arrow 8x10 "Fadeout" Episode Review

February 29, 2020 by Aaron Ngo

Arrow Season 8 Episode 10 Review. Series Finale. Written by Aaron Ngo.

Arrow has officially finished its eight-season run. I’m sad to see this show end, but it was time for Oliver Queen (Stephen Amell) to rest. Going into the series finale, everyone was unsure how the series would say goodbye or if it needed to. Crisis on Infinite Earths did the job of saying goodbye to Oliver Queen and paying tribute to his sacrifice in the crossover, which argued the purpose of a series finale. Basically, it focused on the people Oliver left behind and the impact he had on them.

My Hero Academia: Heroes Rising Anime Movie Review

February 27, 2020 by Aaron Ngo

My Hero Academia: Heroes Rising Anime Movie Review. Written by Aaron Ngo.

This second movie found a way to entertain new viewers, offer character payoffs for long-time fans, and it was exciting without needing to connect to the main anime series. The events of this movie take place between season four and season five or sometime during season five. Somewhere around there. It’s honestly not that important right now. Enjoy action!

My Hero Academia: Two Heroes Anime Movie Review

My Hero Academia: Two Heroes Anime Movie Review. Written by Aaron Ngo

I decided to write an anime movie review on My Hero Academia: Two Heroes because I’m seeing the new movie this upcoming week, and I’m preparing myself to have some fun.

My Hero Academia: Two Heroes is a standalone anime movie released in 2018. The design of the movie was the safe bet, being an interesting way to introduce a broader audience to the anime while still fitting into the canon of the series.
