Genshin Impact “Chapter 9: Ludi Harpastum” (Part 1 + Part 2) Webtoon Review

December 12, 2020 by Aaron Ngo

Major Spoilers are included in this Webtoon Review. Please read with caution.

On October 24, 2020, I started and finished Genshin Impact Webtoon’s Chapter 9: Ludi Harpastum Parts 1 and 2. This chapter acted like a side-quest—distracting Amber and Collei from the main quest assigned to them by Jean—for the characters to have fun during the Ludi Harpastum: a yearly carnival to celebrate songs, wine, and flight. They didn’t really dive into why the people celebrated Ludi Harpastum, but the great character moments between Amber and Collei were more than welcomed. I’m hoping this means the Webtoon has officially decided to make Amber and Collei the main protagonists.

I’m really not liking how there’s a real debate / confusion on “who’s the main protagonist of this series?” This shouldn’t be a thing, but it is what it is. At least in the video game, we know the main protagonist is us—the mysterious Traveler and our companion Paimon. I do wonder if they will eventually show up in the Webtoon as well. Also, I really want Venti the Bard to come back to the Webtoon. He was so cool!

Anyway, the chapter was pretty fun. Amber is really brainless about the carnival game schemes, but she is trying her best to show Collei how to have fun. Collei also got wrapped up in the games because she couldn’t stand Amber easily falling for the obvious schemes. Seeing them interact and having a good time at the carnival was needed for the establishment of their character dynamic.

The artwork was consistently gorgeous, especially with Amber changing her outfit for the special occasion. The carnival games and the other people were also drawn brilliantly, with a clear focus on their designs and the setting—which is the prime reason for me continuing onward with this Webtoon. The montage of Amber playing the games was my favorite part of the two-part chapter.

There was no plot development for once—which was nice—as I have been saying the Webtoon needs to focus on their characters more. They’re cute, adorable, and fun to watch so I’m not understanding why the Webtoon’s been neglecting them so hard. Without the characters, there is no story! It’s as simple as that!

I think I’ll close out the review with that. Thanks for reading my thoughts, everyone! I’ll see you all in Chapter 10: Fools Trick!
