On August 30, 2020, I started and finished reading Tower of God Volume 1’s fourth story arc: “Yu Han Sung’s Examination”. This story arc started by resolving the conflict between Lero-Ro and a stubborn Regular who couldn’t accept that he failed the pretest before moving onto the next official test. Before Lero-Ro departed though, he warned Baam not to get close to Khun because his family was dangerous. This warning set-up the arc’s heavier focus on Khun’s background.

Yu Han Sung—a male with a feminine appearance—was also introduced as the Ranker of this examination. The examination was centered around picking the right door out of twelve to clear the floor, but there were no hints on which one to pick other than screams—from the other teams attempting the examination—after five minutes passed. Since the other teams aren’t given a visual on what the other teams did while picking a room, the screams are their only hint and a sign of failure.

Khun’s intellect was put to the test during this examination, and the flashbacks to the past also reveal he has an intense distrust toward everyone and everything to the point that he couldn’t trust his own answer. In the end, the main lesson about teamwork was established. Baam, Khun, and Rak are going to be an interesting protagonist group.

The other side-characters were also shown at the end of this arc and their methods on how they picked the right door. Leesoo—the one who teamed up with Hatsu and Anak—was the only character who figured out the truth behind the test. I’m excited to see how the other characters factor into the story in addition to learning their personal motives for wanting to reach the top of the Tower.
