Marvel's Iron Fist Netflix Original Season Two Review

Major spoilers are included in this review. Read with Caution. Or not. It's Iron Fist After All.

I had a chance to dive into this 10-episode second season over this weekend. Let's say... it's definitely an improvement compared to the first season, but it still has a lot of kinks to work out. However, it is saying a lot that this show is trying it's damn hardest to make the "white savior" trope work despite the negative criticism on how it didn't work.

I do commend the second season though for side-lining Danny Rand (Finn Jones), the main protagonist. For any other show, that'd probably be a bad idea, but Iron Fist really needed him out of the way. While the show continues to awkwardly makes him the main lead, this was arguably Colleen's season as her story involving her search for biological family and her scenes alone were way more engaging.

In fact, even the boring characters like Ward Meachum and his sister Joy were kind of more interesting than him, but not by much. They're not really worth talking about beyond that. Ward is on the same likable level as Danny, and Joy was too inconsistent in every scene she had with Davos.

I was impressed with the overall fight scenes though. It looked like Danny knew some Kung Fu unlike the stiff movements he displayed in the first season.

While the shorter episode count was best for this second season, it still didn't help with the bad pacing. The story was hard to get through at times until episode 8. The turning point of the show for most viewers. It was the twist we didn't know we wanted...

COLLEEN WING DECIDES TO INHERIT THE IRON FIST!

After Davos stole the Iron Fist from Danny in a ritual, Danny goes through an identity crisis. He doesn't know who he is without The Fist but also has a epiphany. The Fist changes him into an awful person, and he has to figure himself out first. This leads to Danny offering Colleen The Fist in his place, THE ONE GOOD IDEA HE HAS!

Colleen does not want it at first because she harbors guilt over Bakuto and killing him to save Misty in The Defenders mini-series. After seeing her friend BB get killed though and kicking all his former friends' asses, she decides she needs to inherit The Fist and clean the streets of corruption... like a true vigilante.

Misty and Colleen scenes, chemistry, and fight scenes were the best parts of the season. I loved them together so much. Daughters of the Dragons has to happen at some point. It's so cruel how they are denying us this spin-off.

Davos is the main antagonist of season two, who feels wronged by his failure to inherit the Fist. He also hates Danny for abandoning K'un-Lun, not killing The Hand during first season, and basically ruining his life. While a full on lunatic by season's end, the flashbacks do help paint Davos as somewhat sympathetic, particularly in the scenes with his mother.

He also banged a lady named Mika. I don't know why that happened... I think it was blackmail to get the ancient bowl for the transference Iron Fist ritual. They didn't really elaborate on the sexual act, but Joy recorded it. Definitely blackmail material and she had the bowl. But they paid for it... I don't know.

The character Mary Walker was an interesting one to include in this season. I wasn't sure what they were doing with the DID (dissociation identity disorder). It portrays Mary somewhat more confusing as she is either good or evil based on what personality is in control. The way they revealed her condition was not clever at all... Joy was looking through her things and found the letter listing everything about Mary's DID. In the end, she is coercing Joy to help her with finding the third personality. I haven't garnered enough interest to speak further about this.

The ending was actually unexpected. Everything else in the show was somewhat predictable. I got Ward was banging his sponsor, Davos would steal the Iron Fist, Mary had split personality, and that Joy would regret her actions. Etc. Etc.

Colleen has embraced her new role as the Immortal Iron Fist, protector of Chinatown while Danny and Ward go to Asia in search of Iron Fist lore. Somehow, Danny has regained his own Iron Fist and channels it into two guns. This opens up so many intriguing possibilities for a season three...

That's all I got on the second season! Sound off in the comments if you want to discuss anything else further. Thanks for reading!
