Supernatural 13x16 “Scoobynatural” Episode Review
Brief recap for those unfamiliar with the show but want to read about this amazing crossover special with Scooby-Doo. Supernatural is about two brothers who hit the road to hunt demons, ghosts, angels, etc. All kinds of supernatural creatures.
But honestly? The recap is irrelevant for this episode review. You can watch this episode out of context and find a way to love it. Most of the episode's run is animated and the only live-action is the beginning, two scenes—only two I can't stress this enough— in the middle for flashback purposes, and the ending when they get out of there.
Now I leave you with my thoughts:
After 13 seasons of this incredible show, I was pleasantly surprised to see this crossover happen. Scooby-Natural was announced around the time this show got renewed for its 13th season. The show has been renewed recently for a 14th season since we're on the subject. Thank Chuck!
This hyped episode was somewhat pure, kind of innocent, 100% fun, and absolute proof that this show can still pull off such insanity and get away with it. The Winchesters can get away with anything at this point.
I have watched this episode twice now and still found it quite delightful. The YouTube video clips keep me alive!
The first scene with the stuff-killer dinosaur is the place I wanna start. I laughed hysterically watching Dean and Sam fighting the thing, and yes, this is considered 'normal' after seeing crazier things during this show's long run. It threw me off in a good way. A solid opening scene that sets up the light-hearted mood once the Winchesters get sucked into the cartoon.
How do they sucked into the cartoon you might ask? A haunted TV that Dean turns on in his Dean-cave is how they get transported to Scooby-Doo land. This is where die-heart Supernatural fans rejoiced!
Seeing Dean and Sam interact with the Scooby Gang was the best thing I have ever witnessed on this show. Dean hitting on Daphne—totally expected but creepy—and hating Fred was bonkers. Velma and Sam debating about the mystery case and his broad shoulders was great. I enjoyed very minute of their interactions. Then there's Castiel who arrived later in the episode, hanging out with Shaggy and Scooby.
Having the Scooby Gang exposed to the Supernatural almost went too dark but in an amusing way. Fred hit his head on a tree repeatedly, Velma spiraled, Daphne contemplated Heaven and Hell, and Shaggy—with a broken arm—lectured them all about his and Scooby's righteousness. It took Dean giving them a pep talk, referencing various episodes and villains they defeated, to knock some sense back into them for the final battle against the spirit... even Sam jumped in with his own Scooby knowledge.
Despite the humor I found in the Scooby Gang falling a part fighting against the spirit (Daphne and Velma suggested multiple shotguns to finish it off), I felt relieved that the Winchesters and Castiel were able to put the gang back together before heading back home. The idea of them all keeping this horrible knowledge would have made me extremely uncomfortable.
Now for my favorite moments:
Sam's disdain for cartoon logic—no words on the newspaper, how the gang keeps walking away from dead bodies, their willingness to trust complete strangers, Fred's out-of-nowhere coconuts, and the list goes on. Next is the chase montage! The nostalgic theme song got me singing along without fail and all the Easter eggs I spotted—I see you Scrappy. Velma kissing Sam was glorious and finally the classic Scooby-Doo ending when Dean imitated Scooby-Doo. Castiel and Sam may have disapprove, but I certainly did not object... Never change Dean, never change.
What I didn't like? The lack of Scooby Snacks. There were plenty of opportunities and they couldn't find time to include it? I waited and waited, but the snacks never made an appearance. Quite the disappointment.
This anticipated crossover episode will be one of the show's most iconic and currently in my top five favorite episodes alongside the 200th episode special, the French Mistake, season five finale, and the Mystery Spot.
I hope this inspires some of you to watch Supernatural or at least watch this particular episode. You will not be the same afterwards, I promise you that.
