Another Life Netflix Original Season One Review

October 03, 2019 by Aaron Ngo

Another Life Season 1 Review. Written by Aaron Ngo.

Another Life is a difficult one to process. And also a difficult one to review without sounding incredibly harsh. Let’s start with what the series is about… that’s hard to nail down as one progresses the season. The series is about unknown alien tech landing on Earth, and the dream team lead by top-notch astronaut / space traveler Niko (Katee Sackhoff), who leaves her husband and daughter behind on Earth.

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse Movie Review

Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse Movie Review. Written by Aaron Ngo

I wrote Spider-Man: Far From Home and thought, “Maybe I should share my views on this Spider-People” movie too. Yes, I said “Spider-People” and not “Spider-Men”. Anyways, I watched this movie when it was released on Netflix during the summer. Into the Spider-Verse follows Mile Morales as he gets bitten by a radioactive spider and becomes Spider-Man.

This Is Us 4x02 "The Pool: Part Two" Episode Review

October 02, 2019 by Aaron Ngo

This Is Us Season 4 Episode 2. Written By Aaron Ngo.

This was a true This Is Us premiere. While last week’s episode wasn’t terrible, this episode was bringing us back for that soft reboot while also reminding us why we love this show. The show is clearly going to leave season three in the rear view mirror and focus on the literal future. However, this second episode does go back to that Public Pool they visited during season one.

Spider-Man: Far From Home Movie Review

October 02, 2019 by Aaron Ngo

Spider-Man: Far From Home Movie Review. Written by Aaron Ngo.

In light of Tom Holland staying in the MCU, thank you Sony and Marvel for compromising that 25% deal, I’ve decided to discuss this amazing movie. This is the last movie in Phase 3, concluding the Infinity Saga of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. While most people would believe Avengers: Endgame should be the definitive conclusion, Far From Home follows the aftermath of that battle and how Tony Stark’s death affected young Peter Parker (Tom Holland).

The Society Netflix Original Season One Review

October 02, 2019 by Aaron Ngo

The Society Season One Review. Written by Aaron Ngo.

The Society has a lot of potential to be something more than they showed us. The premise of the show is pretty much Lord of the Flies meets LOST. A couple hundred teenagers go off on a school field trip away from West Ham, the name of their hometown. They get unexpectedly dropped off after a terrible storm, but this is where things get… complicated.

13 Reasons Why Netflix Original Season Three Review

October 01, 2019 by Aaron Ngo

13 Reasons Why Season Three Review. Written By Aaron Ngo.

Season three proved one thing. 13 Reasons Why has overstayed its welcome on Netflix with that season four renewal. While I personally believe this season is superior over season two in a lot of ways, it should’ve ended here. The main characters had definitive endings to their stories, the plot was brought whole-circle, albeit in a troublesome way, and… the show is just so tiresome.

The 100 Season Six Review. Written by Aaron Ngo.

“Do better” - Monty’s last wish haunts the rest of the characters, especially Clarke and Bellamy, going into this sixth season. The characters have to rebuild life for the billionth time on a different planet, and make alliances with the people there. It seems easy to do until the dark truth comes out about their history. The 100 left us off shocked last season when we jumped forward a 100+ years into the future.

The Good Place 4x01 "A Girl From Arizona, Part One" Episode Review

The Good Place Season 4 Episode 1 Review. Written by Aaron Ngo.

The season premiere kicked off with an endgame in mind. This show is nearing its end and finding ways to revisit its roots without it feeling forced in the slightest. Eleanor is now in charge, no longer the bad person she used to be when the series began. The fate of the entire human race is in these characters’ ridiculous hands.

Mistborn: Shadows of Self Book Review

August 31, 2019 by Aaron Ngo

Mistborn: The Shadows of Self Book Review. Written by Aaron Ngo.

After I finished The Alloy of Law (Published in 2011), I immediately started reading Shadows of Self (Published in 2015) throughout August 2019. The Wax and Wayne series is too good to pass up, and Brandon Sanderson’s writing has consumed me. For some context, Era 2 of the Mistborn adventures take place several centuries in the future after Vin and Elend’s time, which is idealized in stories and religion.

DC's Legends of Tomorrow 4x16 "Hey, World" Season 4 Episode 16 Promo (Season Finale) - SEASON FINALE - While on a mission to find Ray (Brandon Routh), Constantine (Matt Ryan) and Nora (Courtney Ford) discover Neron's evil plan.

DC's Legends of Tomorrow 4x16 "Hey, World" Episode Review

carnival-1508858.jpg

Major Spoilers are included in this episode review. Please read with caution.

This episode did everything to wrap things up. This season has been the most ridiculous one yet, but it wasn’t the best one. Out of all the Arrowverse shows this year, this season is definitely my favorite in terms of having fun. It had heart, character, and it was on-the-nose about everything. The Monitor even stopped by during the closing moments to watch the nonsense unfold.

John and Nora were trapped in Hell looking to save Ray, while the rest of the Legends are trying to build Hey, World in time to show everyone magical creatures are good. Yeah, this show is sometimes hard to swallow. I enjoy it so much. Luckily, borderline lazy writing perhaps, the magic book they needed was already in their possession thanks to Mick already stealing it from the Time Bureau’s magic vault.

Then in Hell, there were screams of terror coming from Ray’s prison, but based on the countless times I’ve seen this scenario in television, Ray was okay. I was right in that aspect, but the next part was completely unexpected. Ray was okay and playing Jenga with Vandal Savage. What in the literal hell?

The one serious plotline happening in the finale was Zari. Since acceptance of monsters could change the future, she has to stay on the Waverider to prevent the changes from hitting her. However, when she sees Nate die, Zari decides to risk it so she can bring him back to life with a singalong. Everyone sings, and all is good.

In my opinion, Nate’s story appeared over (whole circle vibe and literal circle), and bringing him back might’ve been a mistake. I don’t know what else they can do with him except find out Zari was taken through the changes in time. Nate keeps falling in love with girls from different time periods like huh.

Overall, I’m excited for season 5 and their involvement in the ultimate Arrowverse crossover event. And I hope Zari comes back too. Everything wrapped up nicely, but the character count needs to go down.

Novel Writing Update #6

June 23, 2019 by Aaron Ngo

In my last writing update, I discussed the halfway point of my fantasy novel. This writing update is an amazing personal accomplishment as I have reached chapter 25 yesterday. I have written 75 words so far in the scene, but it’s going to go along the same lines as chapter 1, from draft #4. Oh yes, the past 24 written chapters were basically filling context to get me to where I began the novel last time. For the past six months, I had a rough time writing everyday and the constant doubt after hearing draft #4 had potential but needed a lot of reedits from my previous writing group.

So, I took my sweet time writing every scene and structuring every single chapter. (Reducing my words from 1,000 a day to 200 was a horrible transition). I asked myself constantly, “Why is this character doing what, why, where, etc?” In addition, knowing their place in the novel helps me navigate the plot sequence, which comes second to the characters.

I put my characters first. As I continued writing, if a decision came between moving the plot or revealing character, most of the time, I picked character which made scene transitions really amusing. I fell in love with my characters. They are all amazing and complex, but it’s so hard to show that in the writing at times. I’m working on it, though.

But writing the scene where I thought would be my beginning is incredible. I’m always learning something from writing this novel, and I know it’ll be worth once this whole thing is fully written out. I already plan to rewrite my first chapter (draft 5) into something else entirely, but I’m fighting myself so I can finish through again. Draft #5 is a crazy time and seeing the pieces start to make sense is the best feeling ever.

Also, I’m finding inspiration for The Legend of 9-Volt (working title), a story I’ve been trying to get off the ground for a year now. It originally started out as a short story, but it was too similar to Crescent Regent, and I had to change the plot but kept the core characters. I’m about 200 words into the Prologue, so it’s better than 0 words.

That’s all I have for you. Thanks to whoever’s silently supporting me. Stay surfing the web, people.

Grey's Anatomy 15x25 "Jump into the Fog" Season 15 Episode 25 Promo (Season Finale) - As fog begins to cover Seattle, the doctors of Grey Sloan navigate through personal complications. Grey's Anatomy 15x25 "Jump Into The Fog" Episode Review

forest-and-fog-1406291.jpg

Major Spoilers are included in this episode review. Please read with caution.

Andrew DeLuca’s going to prison, Meredith and Alex are stuck in the chamber, the deadly fog trapped Teddy, Amelia, Owen, Levi, and Gus’s donor outside the hospital, and Maggie / Jackson are out in the woods still… The last part makes me wonder about the pairing. I think the show needs to cut their losses with that romance especially with the season-finale cliffhanger.

Otherwise, this episode was amazing as usual. It’s starting to become standard for Grey’s episodes to be amazing, and their goal is to surpass that expectation. Fifteen years in the business, and the series shows zero signs of slowing down. It had dramatic-filled surgery, near-death experiences, a pregnancy, and jail / therapy found room to get thrown in, too.

Let’s start with Andrew DeLuca. He’s going to jail, but Grey-Sloan is unsure if they should let him take the fall (morals and all). Meredith wants him to not go through with the fall-out, but she’s stuck dealing with Alex and Gus in the chamber. Alex is desperate to keep Gus alive until the donor arrives, and Meredith tells him about Jo’s depression / what she learned meeting her birth mother.

Teddy is in labor, and Amelia is the one driving her to the hospital. They hit road traffic, but they get talking about Owen. Amelia is not interested in Owen (but will always love him), and makes a hint about being bisexual. This is being treated like a big deal from what I saw on Instagram, but I thought they were subtle hints throughout both Grey’s Anatomy and Private Practice on her sexuality.

Anyways, Amelia managed to convince a cop to let them through to the hospital, which impresses Teddy.

Owen tapped into his war hero mode and did everything in his power (and beyond!) to get Gus’s donor to the hospital. This sequence also did double duty when Amelia and Teddy caught up with them at the emergency entrance. This is where the groups start dividing up and splitting off.

Gus’s donor saves Gus OMG. Teddy and Owen witness their daughter’s birth together and declare they love each other (Allison!!). This is a beautiful moment ,and honestly I was on Team Teddy during the season 6-8 time, but Koracick didn’t deserve that heartbreak. He’s building the crib at her new house!!!

Levi and Nico make up with each other and want to be official. Levi introduces Nico to his mother! They’re going strong into season 16. Hopefully, Nico gets more screentime with this new development.

Meredith, Alex, and Richard Webber admit to Miranda Bailey the roles they played in the insurance fraud to help DeLuca. This puts Bailey in a difficult position… so she fires them all without blinking. The Original Four is splitting up, y’all! Meredith goes to the police station, tells DeLuca she loves him, and tries to clear things up (cliffhanger!).

Alex helps Jo get the help she needs and goes to the psych ward. Bailey and Alex have a small moment that reminds us that Bailey did not want to fire them. Then, there’s more of the woods. Jackson goes out to the fog to check the situation, and leaves Maggie alone in the car… he does not return and the episode concludes (cliffhanger!).

Overall, Season 16 needs to be here. I need answers. Re-watching Grey’s Anatomy until then.

Grey's Anatomy 15x24 "Drawn to the Blood" Episode Review

fog-1311935.jpg

Major Spoilers are included in this episode review. Please read with caution.

Wow. This one-hour was crazy and a well-written penultimate episode that had many cliffhangers on all storylines ahead of the season finale. Alex Karev was waiting on the real donor from London for Gus, Owen and Levi have to convince said donor to commit and not back-out in the middle of a dangerous fog, Bailey and Catherine are meeting with suits, but nobody knows why, Jo and Meredith spend the day in bed, Jackson and Maggie are camping (boring as hell), Amelia and Link discuss where their romance is going, and Teddy is going into labor / realizes she might want to be with Owen!!!

Bonkers, right? Let’s tackle one story at a time.

The London donor. Owen and Levi are trying to calm a patient whose terrified of bad things happening around her. It took convincing to get her to agreed to travel across country, but after her therapist is detained, she panics all over again (the donor has a condition). The singing did help defuse some tension in this scene, humor is needed sometimes, but it was Owen who ultimately convinced her to travel so she help a kid. Then, the cars crashing outside put us back into that panic mode. DON’T OPEN THAT DAMN DOOR, OWEN!

Bailey and Catherine are being mysterious about the topic of the meeting with the suits. Everyone had their guesses, but it was ultimately the predictable one: Meredith’s fraud insurance claim, the one I said would bite her in the ass before this season ended. When DeLuca learns about the situation, being the good guy that he is, he takes the blame and protected her.

Reminds me of what he did for Jo in Season 13 when he dropped the charges on Alex to protect her. Andrew DeLuca does heroic selfless things for the people he cares about. I hope he doesn’t go to jail, but Meredith is stuck in the chamber with Alex when he took the fall.

But let’s rewind to Jo and Meredith in bed. Meredith checks on Jo at her house and gets in her bed to talk. Jo wants her to leave, but eventually, she does open up to Meredith in the harshest way (rape child). Honestly, I was like “Meredith’s got this”, and the woman had a perfect response to Jo’s truth. Meredith reminded Jo how strong she is, and how she turns all the darkness into light.

Meredith even shares with Jo about her drowning incident from season three and how she chose not to fight. Jo gave Meredith the funniest look hearing that. I was not ready, and cried. Meredith Grey is an icon at this point, and I love it. This is good television.

Jackson and Maggie are boring as hell. Whenever their scenes came up, I kept thinking “go back to anything but this”. They have no chemistry and compared to everything else, they had the least stakes / drama.

After Amelia’s indecision about Link, she and Teddy get to talking, which shows that Teddy really wants Owen… what is going on here? Koracick deserves better than this. Anyways, Teddy goes into labor, but luckily Amelia’s there to help her. The fresh take Grey’s took to these love triangles is highly amusing.

Season 15 Finale is going to be nuts.

Grey's Anatomy 15x23 "What I Did For Love" Episode Review

June 17, 2019 by Aaron Ngo
flower-1402771.jpg

Major Spoilers are included in this episode review. Please read with caution.

The official Station 19 / Grey’s Anatomy crossover begins. Picking up where Station 19 left off, Chief Ripley is taken to Grey-Sloan Memorial for treatment. Levi receives the “hero” moment when he learns who Lucas Ripley is. Context: He’s the Fire Chief and Warren’s boss’s boss. That’s a huge deal!

Ben Warren, Andy Herrera, and Robert Sullivan (Station 19 characters) rush to the scene when they learn what happened at the flower shop. Oh yeah. Andy and Warren finally discover Ripley’s secret romance with Vic. This is a huge bombshell because it’s insane that they didn’t figure it out sooner. Long story short: Maggie Pierce treats Ripley, and they bond over their romances (Jackson & Vic).

Since Maggie appeared earlier in Station 19’s season two, she is officially the crossover character. Anyways, Ripley takes Maggie’s advice too seriously, and leaves the hospital / episode on a cliffhanger. This is resolved on Station 19. My review on that episode is here.

Other news…

Meredith commits fraud (typical Grey) to help a father and daughter paid for a surgery they desperately need. This was refreshing to say the least, but now her whole career’s about to end if this ever gets out. Knowing this show, it’s definitely going to come back. Oh yeah. Andrew DeLuca told Meredith he loved her, but of course, Meredith didn’t say it back. She’s not there yet.

Owen learns about Amelia and Link being together, and I’m tired. This guy has to figure it out, and by episode’s end, he does exactly that!!! He is moving forward with the therapist and reveals he wants to be cleared mind when he tells “her”, I Love You! Hopefully, Owen is leaving Amelia alone because Teddy deserves her shot. But Koracick…

Koracick found Teddy a really beautiful home in Seattle. She has been living in a hotel this whole season… If Teddy does choose Owen, she’s going to break Koracick’s gentle heart. I don’t want her to break him.

Levi is being self-centered and tries to use that flaw to cheer Niko up (after he accidentally killed a patient), who is being broody and non-fun.

Then there’s Jo Wilson, who’s continuing her downward spiral. This hits home when Jo misinterprets a phone call and gives a family hope about a donor only to rip it away. I couldn’t help but cry along with her. Her character journey is honestly one of the best written ones I have ever seen on Grey’s, and I hope she pulls through this one, too.

Overall, a pretty good episode that feels unresolved if you don’t watch Station 19. If you have interest in what happened to Chief Ripley and don’t want to watch that episode, a review is here.
